Making the Journey Possible

It started in 2025 when Postmasburg High School deputy principal Ms Leonie A. Vitti watched a marching drill competition on TV and wondered why learners in the Northern Cape couldn’t have the same opportunity.

She took the initiative to get the team started, and soon the learners were competing beyond their province. But getting 39 learners to Cape Town for the National Drill Competition this October was not easy. With no official school budget for the team, fundraising alone could not cover all the costs.

“Our goal is not to leave anyone behind because some of them are incredibly committed,” says Ms Vitti.

Through its Community Response Fund, the Lesedi Solar Park Trust helped the team make the journey to compete on a national stage.

As the year draws to a close, we’re reflecting on the programmes supported by the Lesedi Solar Park Trust in Tsantsabane and Kgatelopele.

What changes have you noticed in your community? Are these programmes making a difference, and where is there still room to improve?

Engagement question 1: Grow Great Champions- Community Health Workers

Are families getting the support they need to help young children grow well?

Grow Great Campaign Champions works with community health workers from the local clinics to monitor children’s growth, identify concerns, and connect families to appropriate support.

As we reflect on this work, we’d like to hear from parents, caregivers, and community members about what they have noticed.

The Lesedi Solar Park Trust’s Relief Fund supports community needs and opportunities that sit outside the Trust’s strategic focus areas, with each request considered case by case.

This month, the Fund helped 39 learners from Postmasburg High School’s Marching Drill Team travel to Cape Town on 3 October 2026 for the National Drill Competition, after they qualified at provincial level. The support covered their travel and participation costs, so the team could represent their school and the wider Postmasburg community on a national stage.

The Trust recognises that the life of a community is bigger than any single strategy. The Relief Fund gives the Trust a way to stand behind the moments of pride, opportunity and need that communities bring forward, so that young people like these learners are able to step onto the stages they have earned.

Local Supplier Opportunity for Tsantsabane and Kgatelopele

Our implementing partner, the Accelerated Learning Project (ALP), is looking for local suppliers to provide learner refreshments and transport for children attending its after-school classes at selected schools.

Suppliers must have valid registration documents, relevant experience, and be able to meet the budget and service requirements.

Choosing subjects, keeping options open

Choosing subjects in Grade 9 can influence the study and career opportunities available to learners after matric. REAP’s Post-School Readiness Programme helps learners make informed choices by exploring their interests and understanding subject requirements.

Skylar Fortuin, a REAP officer at Kuilsville High School in Danielskuil, works with learners in Grades 10 to 12. She says learners should avoid choosing subjects based on pressure from friends or parents.

“One of the common mistakes is that learners choose subjects based on what their friends are choosing or what their parents want them to do.”

For learners who are unsure about their future, she offers reassurance: “I would tell them that it's completely okay not to know what career they want to pursue yet.”

The important thing is to explore options early and get the right guidance to make informed choices.

So, what did you say makes a school successful?

Last week, we asked parents, teachers, learners, and community members in Tsantsabane and Kgatelopele to share their thoughts.

In our WhatsApp poll, parent and community involvement received the most votes, followed by support for learners’ growth and development. Facebook responses added other important perspectives, including safe and welcoming schools, strong teacher-learner relationships, good leadership, and learners taking an active role in their education.

Together, your responses remind us that school success is more than what happens in the classroom. It takes support from families, teachers, schools, and the wider community.

This is at the heart of Lesedi Solar Park Trust’s conception-to-career approach, which recognises that a learner’s journey begins in early childhood and continues through school and beyond. Our programmes, from SmartStart and Grow Great to Nal’ibali, ALP, Project Isizwe, FETCH Wellness Hub, Flourish and REAP - Rural Education Access Programme, contribute to different stages of this journey.

What happens when a teacher moves from showing learners how to do something, to doing it with them, and finally giving them the opportunity to try it on their own?

This is the idea behind I Do, We Do, You Do (IDWDYD) a simple approach that helps teachers gradually move responsibility from the teacher to the learner, while checking understanding along the way.

Teachers at Danielskuil Intermediate School recently explored this approach during a Designing Lessons That Deliver session facilitated by Ntombizanele Hene, Northern Cape Instructional Coach for Common Good.

But what does I Do, We Do, You Do look like in a classroom? And how can it help teachers understand what learners have understood and where they may need more support?

Our Community Voices series continues with REAP, following our conversation with Buang Motshebi about the support he received beyond matric and into his post-school journey.

But what does this support look like for a learner who is still in school and preparing for what comes next?

Chaldre Horing is currently in Grade 12 at Kuilsville High School and joined REAP in Grade 10. As she completes matric, she shares how REAP has supported her with university applications, understanding her options, and thinking about life after school.

Chaldre is still deciding whether she would like to study law, business administration or teaching. She also speaks about how REAP has helped her manage the uncertainty that comes with making decisions about the future.

A new phase of the Lesedi Reading for Enjoyment Project Nal'ibali is underway, with a new team working alongside local partners and communities in Danielskuil, Lime Acres, Skeifontein, Jenn Haven, Groenwater and Postmasburg.

The new two-year grant runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2028, with the project team appointed in September. The team includes 11 people, nine Story Sparkers, one Literacy Mentor, and one Project Coordinator.

This phase places greater emphasis on building the capacity of local partners including schools, ECD centres, CBOs and other stakeholders to strengthen reading-for-enjoyment activities in their own communities.

The Story Sparkers will support reading and storytelling activities directly in communities until June 2027, while the Literacy Mentor and Project Coordinator will continue working with partners into the second year of the project.

The goal is to strengthen the local relationships and capacity needed to keep reading, storytelling and literacy activities going beyond individual sessions and, ultimately, beyond the project funding period.

We’ll be sharing more about the work the team is doing and the communities they are working alongside as this new phase gets underway.

Happy World Teachers’ Day!
Today, we recognize and celebrate teachers who show up every day to help children learn, grow, and discover what they are capable of.

Teaching is about more than delivering lessons. It takes patience, care, knowledge, and the ability to meet learners where they are and support them along the way.

At Lesedi, we believe that supporting learners also means supporting the teachers and practitioners who play an important role in their learning journey. Through the organizations and programmes we support, we work alongside schools, educators, and communities to strengthen the environment in which learning takes place.

Today, we thank all the teachers in our beneficiary communities and beyond for the work they do, often in ways that go far beyond the classroom.
