PSJYM has 4 main roles....
LIAISON WITH SCHOOLS: Our work begins in schools. The Organization has an agreement, permission and a good working relationship with Schools in the community who support our work and assist with issues identified through our work with learners and Parents. YOUTH CENTRE: The youth club is open every day after school where the Organization’s work extends to encourage and
teach young people to make the right choices and decisions in various areas of life, including life-skills, career choices and education requirements, health, safe-sex and drug abuse. Currently, the Youth Club welcomes students from four local schools and receives over 30 children each day from Grade 4 (age 9) to matric who attend the club and also receive help with homework in reading and writing skills. The improvement in children’s motivation, confidence and skills as a result of their time and mentorship with the Youth Centre is evident. HOUSING FOR MATRIC AGE BOYS: The Ministry house is situated in PSJ CBD and is home to 12 boys from low-income families, ranging from Grade 10 to matric. MENTORING, COUNSELLING & MEDIATION: PSJYM has a strong bond with local youth - a trusted and safe place where young people seek and find the guidance and help they need to blossom. Sometimes, intervention and mediation is helpful between students and other parties (ie. families, teachers, other students) when issues such as abuse, neglect and bullying are identified. Through this engagement, we are either able to appropriately help parties resolve their differences and move forwards positively. In extreme cases, we have been able to provide a home for students where issues have been unresolvable. Counselling has proven of great help to many students too and older students are often well placed to mentor their younger peers.
