Evaporation prevention panels mark two years of field testing

The prevention of evaporation remains an effective water conservation measure in reservoirs and storage dams but to date products suitable for the purpose remain scarce.

Globally industrial- strength floating panels capable of withstanding the full force of the elements successfully have to date not been manufactured on scale. South African water conservation entity SCLI and Evapsol has over the past decade developed several trial products with the aim of covering reservoirs and storage dams and has since 2022 succeeded in manufacturing and testing fit- for purpose floating panels.
The advent of climate change has raised evaporation rates substantially, and as drought globally threatens water security the suppression of evaporation of precious stored fresh water is fast becoming essential in reaching water conservation targets.

South Africa is party to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which was declared at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in 2022.

Under the GBF, South Africa committed to a global effort to conserve at least 30% of the world's terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine areas by 2030.

However, to achieve global biodiversity goals of 30%, South Africa would have to dramatically grow its conservation land: An additional 14 million hectares, equivalent to eight Kruger National Parks, must be added to the 16 million hectares already under formal protection.

According to the World Meteorology Organization (WMO) in its State of Global Water Resources report, 2023 was the hottest year on record, marked by prolonged droughts and widespread floods, driven by both the La Niña to El Niño transition and human-induced climate change. According to WMO 2023 was also the driest year for global rivers in 33 years and glaciers suffered the largest mass loss in 50 years.
Globally the warning lights are flickering, and with 3.6 billion people currently facing water shortages, projected to exceed 5 billion by 2050, the report underscores the urgent need for action to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6 on water and sanitation. The State of Global Water Resources report highlights severe stress on global water supplies, with five consecutive years of below-normal river flows and reservoir inflows.
The changing climate is very difficult to comprehend and restore to “normal”. Some of the effects of climate change can be mitigated to aid in terms of water security.
Protecting stored water from ever- increasing evaporation rates is a practical solution which can be implemented with immediate effect.
