STATEMENT ON THE M17 ROAD FOLLOWING ANOTHER FATAL ACCIDENT
It is with great sadness that we have learned of another tragic accident on the M17 Road this morning involving two public transport vehicles. Sadly, lives have been lost, while others have sustained serious injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those affected by this tragedy.
This latest incident comes after repeated concerns were raised about the safety of the M17 Road. As community representatives, we have consistently engaged the relevant authorities and called for urgent intervention to improve road safety and prevent further loss of life.
We wish to remind residents that the M17 is a provincial road and does not fall under the direct ownership or management of the Municipality. However, we welcome the recent decision by the Provincial Department to grant consent for the Municipality to proceed with upgrading and rehabilitating the road.
Since receiving this approval, the Municipality’s Roads and Transport Department, under the leadership of the Executive Mayor and the MMC responsible for Roads and Transport, has been working tirelessly to secure funding, finalise procurement processes, and appoint contractors for the project.
While there were delays relating to contractor appointments, significant progress has been made. Contractors have now been appointed, agreements have been signed, and project implementation is moving into its final preparatory stages. From next week, site assessments and inspections will commence to allow contractors to determine work plans and begin construction activities.
Unfortunately, while this important work has been progressing in the background, further tragedies have continued to occur on the M17. This reinforces the urgency of the planned upgrades and our commitment to ensuring that the project proceeds without unnecessary delays.
We also call on all road users to exercise extreme caution when travelling on the M17. Drivers are urged to obey the rules of the road, adhere to speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and only overtake when it is safe to do so. Crossing into oncoming traffic lanes or taking unnecessary risks places not only the driver at risk but also innocent passengers and other road users.
While infrastructure improvements are necessary, road safety remains a shared responsibility. Through responsible driving and the upcoming road upgrades, we can work together to prevent further loss of life.
We will continue to keep residents informed as the project progresses.
