Schools do more than educate - they connect learners, households and informal reclaimers to local recycling systems 🌊

That is the design behind the Munch-on-the-Move Educational Programme, a key part of our Operation Clean Spot initiative. With 12 schools across three metros, 13,000+ learners reached and 726 kg already diverted from landfill, the model continues to grow.

For ICC Month (September), we're inviting volunteers from across South Africa to join our volunteer database.
By registering, we'll connect you with an ICC Coordinator in your area so you can take part in a local clean-up and help protect our beaches, rivers, estuaries and oceans.
Whether it's your first clean-up or your tenth, your time and effort can make a real impact. Every volunteer helps remove litter, collect valuable data, and inspire others to care for our environment.

Every successful International Coastal Clean-up begins with prepared, informed and committed volunteers and organisers. Join us for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) 2026 Volunteer and Organiser Readiness Workshop, where we will equip you with the knowledge, tools and support needed to deliver safe, impactful and well-coordinated clean-up events.

During the workshop, you’ll receive guidance on event management, volunteer coordination, data collection, reporting best practices.

Whether you are joining the ICC network for the first time or returning to lead another successful clean-up, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge, confidence and resources to make an impactful contribution to one of the world’s largest citizen science initiatives.

Did you know that Marine Protected Areas are some of the ocean's most valuable safe havens? They provide space for marine life to feed, breed and thrive while protecting the habitats that keep our oceans healthy.

From vibrant reefs and kelp forests to estuaries and deep-sea ecosystems, these protected areas play a vital role in conserving biodiversity, supporting sustainable fisheries, strengthening climate resilience and advancing scientific research.

As we prepare to celebrate MPA Day tomorrow, take a moment to appreciate the incredible marine environments that sustain both people and nature.
Together, we all have a role to play in protecting our blue planet whether it's reducing pollution, respecting protected areas or sharing why healthy oceans matter.

What happens when journalists understand the full picture of plastic pollution? 📰

Last month, our Head of Marine and Coastal Impact Programmes, Dr Stacey Webb, joined a GIZ media training workshop in Cape Town, sharing insights from SST’s work across 54 African countries and over 240 monitored sites with 17 journalists from Daily Maverick, News24.com, Sowetan LIVE, Jacaranda 94.2 and GroundUp.

The goal: equip reporters to tell the full story - from product design and packaging through waste collection and recycling to what actually works on the ground.

When the people reporting the story understand the full system, the stories they tell can help build it.
