Sustainable Seas Trust

Sustainable Seas Trust SST is a science-based organisation working to protect Africa’s seas and enable the blue economy.

We are a science-based institution working to protect Africa’s seas and communities for the benefit of all who live on the continent. We inspire individuals, organisations, and communities to become passionate and committed custodians of Africa’s seas through an Africa-wide network empowered by research, education, economic upliftment, and collaboration. Our goal is to enable people across Africa

to drive the blue economy and create flourishing coastal communities for the long-term wellbeing of all.

If marine pollution were just an awareness issue, we’d have solved it by now.

The real challenge?
Fragmented systems. Missed connections. Solutions that aren’t scaling.

Join Beyond the Headlines - a pan-African conversation on what’s actually happening, and what it will take to fix it.

Why doesn’t awareness always lead to recycling behaviour?
Across SST’s work, we’re seeing that the challenge is not awareness, it’s systems.

People are willing to recycle, but consistent action depends on whether systems make it:
✔ Easy
✔ Clear
✔ Connected to real waste networks

When these conditions are in place, behaviour becomes consistent. When they are not, gaps remain, even with high awareness.

🌍 This Earth Day, we reflect on our shared responsibility to protect the planet that sustains us.

This year’s theme, Our Power, Our People, reminds us that meaningful change begins with each of us, and grows through collective action.

Waste remains one of the most urgent challenges facing our ocean and communities. Addressing it requires informed voices, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to act.

The African Marine Network (AMN) Membership creates a space for this, connecting people, knowledge, and action towards a more sustainable future.

As part of this, members receive discounted access to the African Waste Academy’s courses, supporting practical skills development in waste management, sustainability, and circular economy innovation.

Through learning, collaboration, and shared purpose, we can drive lasting change for our ocean and our communities.

We talk about marine pollution. But do we really understand what’s happening on the ground?

Across Africa, solutions are already in motion, but they’re fragmented, under-recognised, and not scaling fast enough.
It’s time to change that.

Join us for a high-impact, pan-African conversation that goes beyond the headlines into the real systems, real challenges, and real opportunities shaping marine pollution and waste management today.

🗓 05 May 2026
⏰ 11:00–12:00 (SAST)

This is not another awareness webinar. This is where insight meets action.

Hear directly from leaders across policy, private sector, research, and implementation as they unpack:
⚡ What’s actually working
⚡ Where the system is breaking
⚡ What it will take to scale solutions across Africa

If you care about real impact, this conversation matters.

SST recently participated in the Ocean Innovation Africa Summit 2026 in Durban, joining funders, policymakers, and implementers shaping Africa’s blue economy.

What we’re seeing is a clear shift from isolated projects to scalable, systems-level solutions.

At SST, this directly informs our approach: strengthening data, refining scalable models, and building partnerships that enable impact across contexts 🌊♻️
