🌊 It’s Marine Month!

Our ocean is connected to everything around it — including what happens on land.
Marine pollution doesn’t simply appear at the coastline. Waste can travel through streets, stormwater systems and rivers before reaching the sea, making the way we manage waste and our everyday actions part of the bigger picture of ocean health.

This Marine Month, SST is focusing on raising awareness about marine pollution, strengthening understanding of ocean health and encouraging action that can help keep waste out of our waterways and ocean.

During Marine Week in the second week of October, our team will be engaging with learners across Nelson Mandela Bay to raise awareness about ocean health and marine pollution. These engagements will create an opportunity for learners to better understand the connection between our everyday actions and the health of our ocean.

The ocean is connected to us. So is its future. 🌊

We're proud to announce that Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) CEO, Janine Osborne, will be speaking at WasteCon 2026 on the topic:
From Awareness to Action: Education as a Driver of Behaviour Change in Waste Management and Recycling
What makes a school a durable hub, not a once-off activation?

Education has the power to create lasting environmental change but only when it inspires meaningful behaviour change beyond the classroom.
Drawing on SST's experience in environmental education and community engagement, Janine will explore how schools can become long-term hubs for sustainability, empowering learners, educators and communities to take action that lasts.

WasteCon is Africa's leading conference and exhibition focused on waste and resource management. It brings together professionals from government, municipalities, industry, academia, NGOs, and the recycling sector to share practical solutions, discuss policy, showcase new technologies, and advance the circular economy. It is hosted by the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) every two years.

♻️ What happens when we teach young people that waste isn’t simply “something to throw away”?

Through SST’s Operation Clean Spot (OCS) and Munch Educational Programme, learners are introduced to practical ways of understanding waste, making better choices and taking action in their schools and communities.

Because recycling isn’t only about what happens to a bottle or can after it leaves your hands. It’s about building habits, changing mindsets and helping create a culture where resources are valued rather than wasted. 🌍

This National Recycling Day, don’t just recycle, mobilise someone else to do it too.

Speaking to International Coastal Cleanup Day (Sept 19), SST's Dr Stacey Webb puts the data into perspective 🔍

With years of ICC involvement behind her, Dr Webb has watched plastic steadily come to dominate what communities find – food wrappers, bottles, caps and plastic fragments appearing in the global top 10 year after year.

That consistency tells us something important: where waste enters the environment, and where change is needed most.
