YMCA Nelson Mandela Bay, in partnership with Tangible Africa, is proud to introduce the Change-Maker Coding Programme.

The programme is open to young people and community members interested in developing digital and coding skills, strengthening creative problem-solving, and exploring how technology can contribute to addressing real-world challenges.
Attending provides an opportunity to gain practical skills, explore the Sustainable Development Goals, connect with others, and become part of a community committed to creating positive and sustainable change.

As they get closer to completing their sessions, it’s incredible to reflect on how far they’ve come. This group gained valuable culinary skills that are already making an impact in their personal lives, building confidence, creativity and a sense of possibility for the future. This is what empowerment looks like. Equipping young people with skills they can use. Opportunities they can build on and confidence to create better futures.

Yesterday, we held our multisectoral panel discussion centred around Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) awareness under the fitting theme, “Everyone Plays a Part – It Takes a Community.”

The event provided an opportunity for stakeholders from the healthcare sector, the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development and SAPS in Gelvandale to share their knowledge and experiences of FASD, each bringing a different perspective shaped by the work they do in our communities.

By bringing these different voices into one conversation, we hoped that everyone in attendance would leave with a greater understanding of FASD and the role they can play in creating communities that are more informed and empathetic towards those affected by it.

A special thank you to Dr Refiloe Sekgotha for delivering an insightful keynote address, and to our partners in substance abuse prevention in Gelvandale, the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, as well as our youth empowerment partners, Masifunde. Your contributions to the conversation were greatly appreciated.

Our second pop-up campaign took place today at St Thomas Senior Secondary School, where our Change Makers spread the word about sustainable living and caring for our natural environment using the trusted Masifunde Spark magazine.

We were excited to be part of Bluu Car Rental’s third Wellness Day, an initiative focused on promoting healthy living and the wellbeing of its employees.

As an organisation committed to mental health and substance abuse prevention awareness, we appreciated the intentional effort to bring together organisations working across the health and wellness space, and were grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.

The day brought together representatives from Momentum, Discovery Health, Kaleo Gap Cover and ACTV on 6, creating space for employees to learn about available support and connect with organisations working to promote healthier lives.

What’s eco-tourism, why does it matter, and how can young people become champions for a greener future?

Our first Change Maker group from Gelvandale High School hosted a pop-up campaign, introducing their peers to eco-tourism using the Spark magazine.

The campaign encouraged learners to advocate for a responsible green environment at school and in their communities, while exploring how they can become good champions for natural area management and the protection of our natural spaces.

Through peer-to-peer learning and action, our Change Makers are putting sustainability into practice.

South Africa has one of the highest recorded rates of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the world, with some local communities reporting prevalence rates as high as 14% to 28%. It is a completely preventable condition, yet it continues to affect thousands of children and families across our nation.

To address this issue, YMCA Nelson Mandela Bay is hosting a community panel discussion featuring key stakeholders from the Healthcare Sector, Indlela Mental Health, SAPS, and local community partners.

We’ve partnered with 𝗙𝗡𝗕 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝟳 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, supporting entrepreneurs in Gqeberha to build stronger, more sustainable businesses.

Day one of the 12-week programme got off to a resounding start, with enthusiastic conversations around entrepreneurship and the realities of building an enterprise, led by the Heavy Chef team.

Through our Meaningful Work pillar, we’re committed to creating opportunities that equip young people and entrepreneurs with the skills and networks they need to pursue sustainable livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

We are building an ecosystem of learning, mentorship, networks and opportunities that equip young people to become future-ready and economically independent.
