Mawande PJ Mkhonto.. A young boy who was raised by a pan Africanists family in Port Elizabeth . After he learned about how he's cousin Sparrow Mkhonto was killed in the cradock four. He sucked about 2L's of petrol from his father's car, wrapped it in towel, about 1 am on march 1989 went straight to kwa ZAKHELE PORT STATION and rent office which he viewed them as symbols of apartheid . He targeted power supplies, opened windows, police van, detective offices, set them alightz and he dissappeared into night. Came home dirty and told he's father. Soon he was rushed into his uncle in grahamstown for safety , who took him to Lesotho where he stayed with his grandmother until 1993 under the name of Thuso Mofolo.. Mawande Mkonto continues to live in Port Elizabeth and playing an active part in community struggles, building altars of hope in the ruins of despair. He couldn't do much to diffuse the white apartheid regime but he played his part. Credit will always go to the man who's actually in the Arena, the one who sweats, who strives valiantly, who errs , who comes short again and again, because thers actually no effort without shortcomings.. PJ Mkonto continues to advocate for injustices and mobilize for youth development in Gqeberha.
