Stromatolites are living rock-like structures built by tiny microbes (mainly bacteria) over a long time. Think of them as layer-by-layer “microbe cities” - where microorganisms trap and bind sediments, slowly forming visible mounds or mats.

Algoa Bay has one of the world’s most scientifically important clusters of living stromatolites, and they’re actively growing right now.

Why does it matter?

These tufa stromatolites in Algoa Bay are among the largest and most extensive coastal deposits known globally, even bigger/more concentrated than similar sites in Western Australia and Northern Ireland.

The way they form mirrors processes that have been happening since the very early history of life on Earth.

And scientists have found unique structures here that haven’t been described at other coastal stromatolite sites anywhere in the world.

In short: Algoa Bay isn’t just rich in life, it holds living formations that connect us to Earth’s ancient past.
