COMPASSION THAT LASTS FOREVER
On Tuesday, 9 June, our club was honoured to have Almarie Anderson from Forever Family Homes sharing her journey with a sanctuary for children facing various forms of crises.
Forever Family Homes was established in 2015 as a project of the New Beginnings Trust, when three dedicated foster families came together in search of mutual support and encouragement.
For more than a decade, these pioneering families had opened their hearts and homes to vulnerable babies in crisis—children who had been removed from unsafe circumstances and placed by the state into foster or safety care. Their commitment to providing love, stability, and belonging laid the foundation for what would become Forever Family Homes.
Today, their network has grown to six devoted family homes across Nelson Mandela Bay, providing nurturing, family-based care for up to 40 children in communities including Walmer, Gqeberha, Bethelsdorp, Swartkops, and Uitenhage!
Each of these beautiful "rainbow families" contributes its own unique strengths and character while sharing a common purpose: building stronger families, stronger communities, and ultimately, a better South Africa. Thank you to Rotarian Norman Foster for bringing the importance of this organization to our club's attention.
Kudos to you, Almarie and FFH Team for bringing hope and a deep sense of belonging to children in crisis, bless your kind and beautiful hearts!

LIFE IS BETTER WITH KIND AND CARING FRIENDS
Today we had a wonderful meeting with Swedish company FORTEX, our Rotary Club's early childhood education members and KEYPAK, discussing the generous FORTEX donation made earlier this year to Lihlumelo Educare Centre. Thank you Mr André Dagerud and his formidable team for furnishing Lihlumele Educare Centre in the Bay with tables, chairs, educational apparatus, and much more, making it possible for them to become a fully functional creche! Please know that we value your support and the positive impact it continues to have on the educational opportunities available to the children at Lihlumelo Educare Centre!

INN SAFE HANDS, INDEED
What an inspiring visit we enjoyed at Inn Safe Hands on Saturday, 9 May. It is here that the words of this remarkable and well-run organisation truly come to life — an inn where children once burdened by abuse and neglect find refuge in the loving arms of people whose compassion and kindness know no bounds; a place where every child is reassured that they are indeed in safe hands.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Pastor Hermanus, his daughter Claire, and the dedicated staff for their selfless commitment to guiding these children onto a healthier and more hopeful path, restoring dignity, love, and the promise of a brighter future to those who once had little hope of escaping their dire circumstances.
A sincere thank you as well to Rotarian Joanne Swarts for bringing Inn Safe Hands to the attention of our club and for organising such a meaningful and memorable visit!

JOY @ ADCOCK
On Saturday, 11 April, the Rotary Club of PE South entertained the residents of Adcock van der Vyver Retirement Home to a social event filled with much joy and laughter! From Start-Stop music surprises and Chair Yoga, to Charades, the latter of which had everyone in stitches!! Prizes to be won consisted of bags of groceries, and all had a super time! Great memories of recently passed Rotarian John Misplon, the brain behind many years of Bingo evenings at the Home and happy Tree of Joy thoughts were shared with the residents, all of whom remember John and his wife Joan with much love.Thank you to Noelene Jorgensen for organising the date with the youth of yesteryear, and for Antoinette, John, Roux, Penny, Joanne, Charlene and Rachel for their kind assistance. The event was rounded off with delicious eats and cooldrink, and all residents went home knowing that they matter and that they are much loved!!

DEDICATION PAR EXCELLANCE
Last week our club was honoured with the presence of the Principal of Khanyisa School for Blind and Partially Sighted learners, Mrs Mahleza, who shared her passion for and dedication towards special education. She also explained about the various challenges teachers and students at Khanyisa School face on a daily basis. With most of the students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, Khanyisa struggles to keep its head above fiscal waters. Despite this, the school is rated one of the best special schools in our province, and once again obtained a 100 % matric pass rate! Well done to the Khanyisa matrics! The kindness and compassion emanating from Mrs Mahleza's being, and the information she shared about the determination and grit of the students, acted as an inspiration to us as able-bodied individuals. Funding is an understandably huge challenge, and this special school needs all the help they can get, from extra staff members dedicated to uplifting the educational lives of visually impaired youngsters, to vehicles, suntan lotion for children with Albinism, educational toys, to name but a few.
Hats off to Mrs Mahleza, her staff, and especially every leaner at Khanyisa School, we are immensely proud of you!

GOODBYES ARE DIFFICULT
Today we bid our final goodbyes to a dear friend, Rotarian, and a man of remarkable kindness and compassion, John Misplon.
During the celebration of his life, his wonderful sense of humour shone through in the many hilarious moments shared by friends — a true reflection of the joy he brought to those around him.
John was a natural leader, a man of strong principles, and someone who never hesitated to stand up for what is right. His integrity and warmth touched countless lives!
Our heartfelt condolences go to his beloved wife Joan, his children Margie and Chris, and to all family and friends as they begin a new chapter without him.
Rest in peace, dear John. Your passing leaves a profound void in the lives of many, but your legacy of kindness and strength will live on.

INN SAFE HANDS
On Tuesday, 24 March, we had the privilege of welcoming Mr Glendon Hermanus from Inn Safe Hands, who delivered an inspiring and deeply moving talk about this 21-year-old haven of care and protection. Inn Safe Hands provides a place of safety for children facing unimaginable challenges, including parental neglect, abuse, and many other heartbreaking circumstances.
Mr Hermanus and his dedicated team are true heroes within our community! They serve as a lighthouse of hope and unwavering support in a world that so often focuses on superficial matters, while overlooking the profound brokenness experienced by vulnerable children. Bless everyone involved with this well-run organisation called Inn Safe Hands; keep up the wonderful work!

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER INDEED
On Tuesday, 10 March, Dr Melissa Pietersen addressed Rotarians, along with their friends and families, on the important topic of gynaecological cancers—serious health challenges that can affect both women and men.
Through her insightful and compassionate presentation, Dr Pietersen helped to break down the embarrassment and stigma often associated with these conditions, encouraging open conversation and greater awareness.
The Purple Project continues to grow from strength to strength, and we extend our very best wishes to Dr Pietersen and her dedicated team in their ongoing efforts. Their work is not only inspiring but also life-saving, making a meaningful difference in the community!

THE LOSS OF AN AMAZING ROTARIAN
On Saturday, 28 February, the Rotary Club of PE South bid farewell to one of the most caring and compassionate Rotarians our club and the wider community has ever known. Ronald McCleland was a true humanitarian and philanthropist, a man whose life embodied the very essence of Rotary International’s philosophy of Service Above Self. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, dear Ronald. Your legacy of service will live on, and you will never be forgotten.
