The “Uprisings” in the Northern Areas in 1990 is an event that has not been
documented in its totality. This historical event traumatized the Northern
Areas community and has left scars of suffering that has not been addressed
to this day. The event has to date not been adequately reviewed and its
significance not evaluated and contextualized. How did it happen? What were the overall circumstances
at the time? How did the political
climate influence the event? What was the significance of the rent boycotts? What role did forced removals play in the development of community’s
psyche and how did this affect what happened during before and after the
event? Who are the people who live in the Northern Areas? What is the
Northern Areas? What behavior and actions lead to the spread of
violence, looting, destruction of property and the killing of innocent people? Key Objectives
1. To create professional support for the development of sustainable heritage projects
in the communities of the Northern Areas and Uitenhage.
2. To promote the significance of heritage production in the Northern Areas and
Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
3. To exchange knowledge and experience in using culture for sustainable communities
through community tourism.
4. To host joint cultural projects and exhibitions with the community in order to
develop perspectives and add capacity to local artists and heritage practitioners
involved in the development of the respective programmes
5. To stimulate critical debate around issues of memorialisation in the Northern Areas.
6. To produce new educational resources and recreational facilities
7. To promote accessibility to culture for local communities and exposure to wider
audiences for community tourism markets. Secondary Objectives: The long term objective is to stimulate nation-building and create a sense of
community through debates, discussions around heritage and history of the
Northern Areas in the context of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Area
