Culture Consciousness Society (CCS) is a society initiated by students of different backgrounds and cultures. It came to their minds as well as their attention that in this institution, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), to the global extension, there is a need for cultural awareness and consciousness. As a point of departure, Culture Consciousness Society believes that in these presen
t days, the whole human race is seeking a formulae or method that would result in the desired world peace. As a prelude, CCS seeks to mobilise, organise and unite students from diverse cultures, races, cults, upbringings and beliefs to come together and build a society or community within which high values of self-respect and appreciation are the roots of human consciousness. This view is developed on the ground that culture has this far played a great deal on human consciousness and conflict in our life time. Thus we believe that through respect and appreciation of self, a pure human race will emerge and cultural harmonisation shall occur as a complement to a true conducive community and student environment without losing the values of self and culture. Through our commitment to cultural and mental emancipation, CCS seeks to give birth to an awakened human consciousness that will embrace and advance the interests of all cultures and races that share solidarity and sympathy towards equitable diversity and advocate for UNITY, SELF-LOVE AND CULTURAL INTERACTION. This we believe can be achieved through a more culture conscious student life, social patterns and a unifying culture that encourages interaction among students with a conducive environment; necessary to foster this resolution through baring and upholding the beliefs, morals, and values of our cultures and selves without fear of contradiction. The Culture Consciousness Society’s ultimate objective is to allow and afford students a room, in this world, to share and critically develop their views and create an institution and society of common social culture base. CCS’s aim is to advance for a community where all will live in the African spirit of UBUNTU through cultural appreciation and respecting differences. In conclusion CCS believes that the academic life provides an infant life stage to all involved in it to share values and beliefs where communal interest can lead to a new life culture that allows for a harmonious professional life. The Society’s slogan, “wake up from the coma and be culture conscious,” reminds and teaches us that today we are and tomorrow shall blossom.
