‼️IT IS ILLEGAL TO KEEP A TORTOISE OR ANY WILD ANIMAL IN CAPTIVITY‼️

This is very important for anyone who has tortoises (OR ANY WILD ANIMAL) on their properties. Without a permit. It is very rare that permits are given. The fine if you are caught with a tortoise or multiple tortoises is anything up to R40 000 and up!

In February an accused was handed a hefty sentence by the Magisrate whose sentence made it blatantly clear that it is illegal to keep a tortoise or any wild animal for that matter as it is a protected species. It is not only a prosecutable offence but seen as a serious act of Animal Cruelty to injure the tortoises by drilling holes in their shells.

This is the sentence that was handed down:

R30 000/ 18 months imprisonment, wholly suspended for 3 years - Environmental Ordinance
2 years imprisonment wholly suspended for 3 years Subsection 2(1)(B) of thr Animal Protection Act 71 9f 1962
Refund veterinary expenses
Cannot possess a firearm
Denial of ownership of any wild animal
Criminal Record for life.
