A long time ago in India, a wise mathematician introduced a new game to the king: chess, played on a board with 64 squares.

The king was so impressed that he offered the mathematician any reward he wanted. The mathematician made a simple-sounding request: one grain of rice on the first square, two on the second, four on the third, eight on the fourth, and so on, doubling the grains on every square until all 64 squares of the chess board were filled.

The king agreed straight away. It sounded like such a small request. But when the numbers were worked out, the truth was shocking. The reward was enormous, close to 500 trillion kilogrammes of rise, enough to cover South Africa in a thick layer of rise.

We tried this in our maths class too. The first row looks tiny and easy. But soon, the numbers explode and your brain gets stuck trying to keep up, showing the meaning of exponential growth in real life.

That’s the power of our hands-on maths: it takes “I have no idea what this is all about” and turns it into something real, clear, and unforgettable.
