There are two key contributing factors hindering development which the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development is lagging on. On one hand, the communal land residents are subjected to tribal levies, despite the constitutional court judgement that declared section 25 of Limpopo Traditional Leadership and Institution Act of 2005 unconstitutional and confirming that traditional leaders have no authority/ powers to impose levies, taxes and fines. On the other hand, land claims are processed at a concerning snail pace. The claims that are finalised speedily are those that do not affect "big businesses'' or claimants accepting financial compensation as opposed to land restoration.

Rural development is not only about improving conditions in villages and small towns - it is about correcting historical injustice and eliminating uneven development.

Our Department, the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, together with government as a whole, remains committed to ensuring that where a person is born does not determine the limits of their future.

After years of eviction threats, the Mooketsi Farm Dwellers finally sees a turning point following the Land Court pre-trial meeting in April 2026. The court ordered compulsory mediation under Extension Security of Tenure Act, affirming that resettlement process must begin with dialogue before displacement. This was the mediator's consultation with the affected communities which will be followed by other interested stakeholders before the actual mediation on 17 and 18 June 2026.

Our series of Human Rights Commemoration in March 2026 involved media engagements and participating in the panel discussion themed ""Advancing rural democracy" with Alliance for Rural Democracy - ARD Legal Resources Centre and LAMOSA. Our branded stall was visible throughout the 2 days at the Activism row. Nkuzi founder, Marc Wegerif and LARC colleagues formed part of the festival. On the last day of the , two Nkuzi delegates joined the running activity aimed to advocating for justice to prevail.
