🐾 Trivia Tuesday 🐾
🧡 Why Are Most Ginger Cats Male?
Have you ever noticed that most ginger cats seem to be boys?
That's because the gene responsible for a cat's orange (ginger) colouring is carried on the X chromosome.
🐱 Male cats have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome (XY).
🐱 Female cats have two X chromosomes (XX).
Because males only need one copy of the ginger gene to be orange, they are much more likely to be ginger than females. Female cats need to inherit the ginger gene from both parents to be fully ginger.
As a result, approximately 75–80% of ginger cats are male!
🧡 Female ginger cats do exist—they're just much less common.
Did you know?
Many tortoiseshell and calico cats are female because their colouring is also linked to the X chromosome. That's why male torties and calicos are extremely rare!
