MEDIA STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The SGB Federation in Limpopo strongly condemns the implementation and interpretation of provisions under the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act (BELA Act) which impose excessive and unrealistic responsibilities on teachers regarding pregnant learners. While we fully support the constitutional right of every learner to access education, we reject any policy that shifts parental, healthcare, and social welfare duties onto educators without proper capacity, training, or resources.

The Act, as currently applied, effectively forces teachers to act as social workers, healthcare coordinators, and law enforcement reporters, exposing them to legal risk and emotional strain. Schools are now expected to monitor pregnancies, prevent stigma, coordinate with health services, and report sensitive cases—functions that fall outside the professional scope of educators and the mandate of School Governing Bodies.

This approach is impractical, especially in under-resourced rural schools, and will inevitably compromise teaching and learning. It places already overburdened teachers under further pressure, leading to burnout, administrative overload, and a decline in educational outcomes.

The SGB Federation therefore calls on the Department of Basic Education to urgently review and suspend the current implementation framework, deploy qualified social and health professionals to schools, and engage stakeholders meaningfully before enforcing such provisions.

We maintain that teachers are educators, not surrogate parents or healthcare providers, and we will pursue all lawful measures to protect their professional dignity and the integrity of the education system.

Primary school teachers celebrate after the Department of Education passes new Bela Act to protect pregnant learners…

Oh I feel so sorry for South African teachers sana ,

There’s now a new act passed to protect pregnant learners in School and places a lot of pressure on teachers to further take care and protect such Learners.

-The Bela act states pregnant learners have the right to education meaning they should not be deprived their right to education by either being expelled or shown any form of rejection by both teachers and learners…

-Where a student is under the age of 16 the duty to report both to the police and social workers is placed on the school teachers.

-Teachers need to ensure that the other learners or any other teachers in school are making fun of the said pregnant learner..

-The responsibility to ensure the pregnant learner gets everything required by pregnant women is also placed on the teacher ,they need to ensure all is well during and after pregnancy 👀

-Teachers are to work hand in hand with the department of health to ensure the pregnant learners safety 🥺

Yhooo kuningi guys but this was drafted to decrease the number of pregnant learners dropping out of school because they get mistreated or bu.l.ied by other learners ….

[BREAKING NEWS]

The MEC for Education in North West, Viola Ntsetsao Motsumi, has repeatedly been warned that the scholar transport provided to learners is hazardous and that many of the buses are not roadworthy.

This morning, an incident occurred in Coligny at a neighbouring farm known as Rapopo. Reports indicate that several learners have sustained injuries.

The safety of our children cannot be compromised by negligence and the continued use of unroadworthy vehicles.

SGB FEDERATION WELCOMES ACTING DISTRICT DIRECTOR DR KOKELA S.J. TO SEKHUHUNE SOUTH DISTRICT

The SGB Federation of Sekhukhune South District welcomes the appointment of Dr Kokela S.J. as the Acting District Director, effective 01 February 2026, following the retirement of Mr Nkadimeng T.G.

Sekhukhune South District has, over several years, faced serious challenges that have negatively affected learners and communities. These include poor matric results, persistent allegations of post-selling, and the collapse of academic outcomes at certain schools, including the widely reported 0% pass rate at Naledi ya Meso Secondary School.

The SGB Federation has consistently raised concerns about these systemic failures, calling for decisive leadership to restore accountability, ethical governance, and learner-centered service delivery.

We are optimistic that Dr Kokela’s appointment marks a turning point for the district, with the potential to restore public confidence, enforce accountability, and focus on quality education outcomes.

The SGB Federation pledges its support to Dr Kokela in driving meaningful change, ensuring that learners are placed at the center of all district priorities. We urge all stakeholders to collaborate constructively to resuscitate Sekhukhune South District’s performance and reputation.
