Reciprocity in Action!

As part of a reciprocity stay, the Congolese Civil Society of South Africa (CCSSA) teamed up with Bertha Retreat for a one-day capacity-building training that turned big, complicated legal topics into real talk for real people.
12 participants (South African citizens plus nationals from Zimbabwe and Malawi) rolled up their sleeves to dig into:

✅ The Refugee Act

✅ The Immigration Act

✅ Citizenship rights

✅ Detention & deportation rights

And the room didn't stay quiet for long! The conversation got lively around why South Africa draws so many refugees and migrants. What does that mean for the economy, for culture, for communities? Big questions, honest answers, and a few myths busted along the way. Civil rights education doesn't have to be boring and this session proved it.

Community Engagement

This Youth Day, around 130 young people from the Dwarsrivier Valley came together at Bertha Retreat for a day of learning, reflection, and fun.

Through games, interactive activities, and discussions, they explored the significance of the 1976 Youth Uprising and tackled an important question: “Who writes your future?”

A screening of Coach Carter sparked conversations about perseverance, responsibility, goal-setting, and making positive choices, with plenty of “aha!” moments and a few laughs along the way.

It was a celebration of youth, encouraging young people to recognise their power to shape not only their own futures, but also the future of their communities.
