Sometimes in life, it becomes very difficult to put pen to paper. This is one of those moments. Yesterday, we bid farewell to Veronique Claes-Tapu as she and her family embarked on their journey back to Belgium. We feel an enormous loss as Belgium gains a remarkable woman. We can only hope that she will be valued at her new place of employment, as much as we miss her
Veronique, or Vero as we affectionately call her, gave us ten years of her life. As Education Coordinator, she set the bar exceptionally high. Vero truly made this role her life's work. Every project, every camp and holiday outing, and every activity she organised for Born in Africa and its children was approached with passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.
There was not a child whose name she doesn’t know personally. Her diligent work ethic, her genuine love for the children, and the utmost respect she showed when communicating with godparents, sponsors, and visitors, was all truly remarkable. Every intern and volunteer who made Born in Africa their temporary home, even for a short while, felt welcomed and supported because they had Vero by their side.
“Vero, your place can never truly be filled. We will miss your insight, your kind and gentle nature, and your invaluable advice. Thank you for being a shoulder to lean on whenever things became difficult. Thanks for lighting up the office, the minute you entered. Thanks for your years of service and your dedication to Born in Africa. To you and your family, we wish nothing but happiness and success as you begin this new chapter in Belgium. May you and Sivuyile enjoy putting down roots there and may Jina and Thimna thrive in their new home and embrace all the opportunities that come their way. Vero, we will miss you each and every day. Thank you for everything you have given to Born in Africa, its children, and all of us who have had the privilege of working alongside you."
