Professional coaches teaching underprivileged children to swim Adopt A Swimmer

Touch the life of a child in a tangible manner.

After a long 8 month wait for registration, Adopt a Swimmer was officially registered as a non profit on the 20th March 2013. Eight days later we launched officially with a brilliantly supported Swimathon and the community truly showed how committed they are to developing swimming skills for children in our greater area. As our first fund raiser it was a highly successful initiative, with young an

d old swimming their most laps possible in an hour, earning their donor funds collected.

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”
~ Edward Everett Hale

How it works

Louise Auersperg who runs Plett Aquatics Swimming, has seen year on year seen how nearly 80% of the youth in our community cannot swim. It became obvious that the reason is largely due to the costs of swimming lessons. Adopt a Swimmer will allow children of all backgrounds the opportunity to develop this essential life skill. The program calls for financial support, by companies and individuals, of a child through the process of acquiring this skill. The estimated time frame to teach a child to swim with confidence is 18-24 months.(there are exceptions)

It doesn’t stop there; if a child shows inclination and promise we will mentor and sponsor them through to the next phase such as galas, Micro Nippers, Nippers, water polo, surfing, NSRI water wise programs, breath holding, Ocean Safari sea trips

NGO Registration number: 116-823 NPO - Registration Certificate

Your support of the Adopt a Swimmer program will touch the life of a child in a tangible manner;

giving them a life skill that will build confidence and a sense of real achievement. We look forward to your participation! Corporate and Event Sponsors:

Without our sponsors we would be nothing. Without our sponsors we would not have little feet in the pool. Without our sponsors we would not have children growing in an essential life skill. Without our sponsors we would not see joy or experience smiles. Without our sponsors we would not be teaching our disadvantaged children to swim. Confidence doesn’t happen overnight.

It comes from encouragement.
It comes from practice.
It comes from someone saying, “You can do this.”

Through Adopt a Swimmer, children are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and discover their own strength in the water.

🏊‍♀️💙 MOVING & GROOVING AT BEACON ISLE! 💙🏊‍♂️

There’s something powerful about seeing our swimmers moving, growing and finding confidence in the water! 🌊✨

Applying the Shaw Method is a real winner — helping our swimmers build skills while working through fear, trauma and the unknown.

Because learning to swim isn’t just about the physical movements. It takes courage, trust, patience and perseverance to face what once felt scary and keep going. 💪🏽

Every kick, every stroke and every brave step into the water is a little victory. 🏆

We are so proud of our Beacon Isle swimmers for continuing to move, groove and grow! 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️

For some children, stepping into the water for the first time is a moment of fear.

With patience, encouragement, and guidance, that fear can become confidence.

A child who once avoided the water can become a swimmer who believes in themselves.

Every lesson matters.

Every swimmer matters.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to swim.

Swimming builds confidence, independence, and awareness around water, skills that can last a lifetime.

At Adopt a Swimmer, we believe every lesson is more than learning strokes. It’s about creating safer swimmers, stronger communities, and brighter futures.

Together, we can help more children discover the joy and safety of the water.

Drowning can happen in seconds.

It can happen to children and adults.

It can happen in swimming pools, rivers, dams, the ocean, and in unexpected places where water may be present.

That is why water safety education matters.

Learning to swim is an important life skill, but drowning prevention is also about awareness, supervision and understanding the risks around water.

Through access to swimming and water-safety education, we can help empower more people to become safer and more confident around water.

Let us continue the conversation and work together towards safer communities.

🌊 A DIFFERENT WAY OF LEARNING TO MOVE IN WATER

This morning, our adults had the opportunity to experience the Shaw Method — a first in South Africa! 🇿🇦

The method helps students develop a deeper ability to sense position, orientation and movement of the body in water.

Learning the art of swimming requires a major shift in how we approach movement. It’s not simply about moving faster or swimming harder — it’s about understanding your body, finding balance and becoming more aware of how you move through the water.

Stillness and being present in the moment are the starting points for all conscious movement. 🧘‍♀️🌊

At Adopt a Swimmer, we believe swimming is about so much more than a skill. It’s about awareness, confidence, empowerment and developing a lifelong relationship with the water.

Stay tuned and stay in the groove! 💙

Water safety is not only about swimming pools or the ocean.

On 17 July 2026, a 3-year-old boy tragically drowned after reportedly falling into a stormwater pond at New Horizons in Plettenberg Bay.

This heartbreaking tragedy is a reminder that water hazards can exist in many different places.

Swimming lessons are an important part of building confidence and water awareness, but drowning prevention also requires supervision, education, awareness of local hazards and communities working together.

From children taking their first steps in the water to adults building confidence and developing new skills, every person who has the opportunity to learn matters.
