The Tzu Chi Foundation proudly celebrates Meha Hurinanthan, a dedicated Grade 6 educator from Durban, South Africa, for achieving 3rd Place in the Character Education Advocate Category at the International USA Character Education Lesson Plan Competition.

Through her inspiring lesson on Thankfulness, Meha encouraged young learners to recognise and appreciate the often overlooked helpers in their daily lives. Congratulations to Fezeka Msweli!
Third-Place Winner – Rising Teachers Category

Fezeka Msweli, a third-year student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has been awarded 3rd Place in the International Character Education Lesson Plan Competition under the Rising Teachers Category.

Passionate about helping learners find their voice, Fezeka developed an engaging lesson plan centered on the theme of Thankfulness. Through a warm and interactive approach, the lesson encourages children to practice gratitude, express appreciation, and develop their ability to listen and share sincerely with others.

The lesson includes meaningful activities such as a Gratitude Circle, where learners share the people, experiences, and things they are thankful for; creating Thank You Cards to express gratitude through words and blessings; and designing a Gratitude Wall, which helps children recognize the beauty in everyday life and appreciate the contributions of others.

Fezeka's achievement reflects her dedication to character education and her commitment to nurturing compassionate, confident, and grateful learners.

【Repairing Homes & Hearts with Compassion ❤️】

At the end of 2025, during a year-end care visit, Tzu Chi volunteers in Durban discovered that senior volunteer Grandma Jali was living in a severely leaking, damp, and damaged house. Youth volunteers immediately began cleaning and repair efforts, clearing clutter, washing dishes and clothing, rebuilding the roof, and reopening windows so that sunlight and fresh air could once again fill the home.

In March 2026, the volunteers returned to the community to begin the second phase of repairs: restoring the floor. Together, they carried sand and stones, mixed cement, and laid new flooring. Community members were deeply touched and voluntarily joined in to help.

This was not only a house repair project, but also an act of love and companionship.

Grandma Jali shared emotionally:
“Tzu Chi did not only repair my house, they helped me feel loved and valued again.”

When people are willing to work together with sincerity and compassion, even the most difficult challenges can be overcome.

This is the spirit that Tzu Chi continues to practice in Africa, repairing homes with love, and repairing hearts with compassion. 🙏🏾✨

🌱 From Small Details, Big Impact

Tzu Chi Durban education volunteers recently welcomed our sisters and brothers from Zambia for a meaningful online exchange on education.

Together, we reflected on an important question:
How do small daily actions shape a child’s future?

Through sharing and discussion, we explored how simple routines—often overlooked—can quietly nurture values such as discipline, responsibility, respect, and independence in children.

In education, it is often not the big actions, but the small, consistent details that make the greatest difference.

This session was not only a time of learning, but also a moment of self-reflection.
👉 Do we pay attention to the details in our daily actions?
👉 Are our actions intentional and purposeful?

As we continue this journey, may we all begin with the small things—

Walking the Path of Compassion: Youth in Action

Tzu Chi volunteers recently travelled to Ndwendwe, Madundube, and Hlokozi, reaching out to patients and families in need. Across rolling hills and distant villages, these dedicated youth volunteers continue to embody compassion in action.

Dressed simply and walking in unity, they journey through challenging terrain to bring not only material support, but also comfort, companionship, and hope. Each step reflects a deep commitment to serving humanity with sincerity and love.

Working hand in hand with senior volunteers, the youth demonstrate humility, respect, and teamwork, supporting their elders along the way while gaining wisdom and guidance in return. This beautiful bond reflects the true spirit of intergenerational unity.

During their visits, they share heartfelt messages of encouragement inspired by the teachings of Master Cheng Yen. Through blessing cards and kind words, they uplift spirits and bring emotional healing to those they serve restoring hope where it may have once faded.

These simple acts of care carry a powerful impact. A listening ear, a gentle hand, and a kind word can turn moments of despair into renewed strength.

Despite the long and difficult journeys, their determination remains unwavering. United by purpose and inspired by love, they continue to walk this path step by step, heart to heart.

Compassion knows no distance. Even the smallest act of kindness can change a life.
