First Aid For Eye Emergencies

Knowing what to do for an eye emergency can save valuable time and possibly prevent vision loss. Here are some instructions for basic eye injury first aid.

Be Prepared
Wear eye protection for all hazardous activities and sports at school, home and on the job that could lead to an eye injury.
DO stock a first aid kit with a rigid eye shield and commercial eyewash (make sure it is not expired) before engaging in activities where an eye injury could occur.
DO NOT assume that any eye injury is harmless. When in doubt, see an eye doctor promptly

Preparing your home for winter in South Africa.

Generally, all homes should check roof tiles, clean gutters, draft-proof windows/doors, and service heating systems.

Summary Checklist and general safety for All Locations
Load Shedding Preparation: Service generators, charge power banks, and stock up on gas for cooking/heating.
Fire Safety: Never leave heaters or electric blankets on unattended. Ensure you have working smoke detectors.
Safety Check: Check that security beams and outside lighting are functional, as days are shorter
Fireplace Maintenance: Before your first fire, have your chimney swept to remove bird nests or soot (creosote) buildup, which is a major fire hazard.
Geyser Blanket: Regardless of your region, a geyser blanket is one of the most effective ways to lower electricity bills during the South African winter.
Tree Trimming: Trim any large or dead branches near your roof. Coastal winds or heavy snow can easily cause them to snap and damage your property.

Blind brothers turn passion for soccer into commentary and bring the game to life

Driving through the streets of Rosettenville, a working-class suburb in the south of Johannesburg, we see many of the houses are dilapidated, the roads are riddled with pot holes and it is quiet.

But at about 3pm, when school is done, the suburb comes to life. Neon cones block off sections of the road and children, still in their uniforms, spill onto the streets to play soccer.

Winding through the neighbourhood to avoid disrupting these informal games eventually leads to Corinthians Africa, a nonprofit organisation working to change perceptions of disability and create opportunities for visually impaired youngsters to be part of the beloved game.

Non-Computer Careers for People Who Are Visually Impaired

When you think about jobs for people who are blind or have low vision, the first thing that might come to mind is sitting behind a computer. And while there are many opportunities in tech and office work, not everyone wants their day to be defined by a desk. Maybe you’re looking for something more hands-on, more active, or more centered on human connection. And in that case, you’re in luck. If you’re blind or visually impaired, there are plenty of careers that fit your strengths and interests.

Choose a Career Based on Your Strengths

Choosing a career when you’re blind or low vision may feel daunting, but remember: most jobs are achievable with the right tools and adaptations. The key is to look for roles that connect with your strengths and values.

Brain "rewires" itself to enhance other senses in blind people

A Mass. Eye and Ear research team found that the brains of those who are born blind make new connections in the absence of visual information.

Many people believe that the blind are able to hear better and have keener senses of touch and smell, but is there any evidence to support this assumption?

How to Cope With Accessibility Fatigue
If you’re blind or have low vision, you’ve probably developed an incredible set of problem-solving skills just to get through the day. But even with all that resilience, there are times when it starts to wear on you. The energy it takes to navigate inaccessible tech, advocate for your needs, or plan every detail in advance can start to feel like a lot. That’s when accessibility fatigue can set in and it’s something many people in our community experience.

What Is Accessibility Fatigue?
Accessibility fatigue is a type of burnout that happens when you’re constantly having to go the extra mile by figuring out workarounds, educating others, or doing more just to access the same tools, spaces, or opportunities. Living in a world that isn’t always designed with you in mind adds up to a steady mental load.
