“Looking back on my time at TWC, I realise just how much those years shaped the person I am today.

My junior school years hold some of my happiest childhood memories — friendships, laughter, school traditions and all the little moments that make growing up so special. I’m incredibly fortunate that some of the friendships I made during those years have continued to this day.

High school was a very different chapter. Much of my teenage years involved managing lupus, an autoimmune condition, as well as avascular necrosis (AVN), which affected the blood supply to my hip bones and ultimately caused both hips to collapse. Having two hip replacements while still at school was certainly not what I had imagined for my teenage years! Between hospital stays, recovery and trying to keep up with school, I was also navigating all the usual challenges of being a teenager.

Despite this, my years at TWC are still filled with so many happy memories. I was blessed with friends who kept me included and teachers and staff who went above and beyond to support me. Whether I was in hospital, recovering at home or back at school, I always felt cared for. That kindness and understanding made a lasting impact on me.

After TWC, I studied at Stellenbosch University before moving to Cape Town, where I began my career as an IT auditor at Deloitte. I’m still based in Cape Town and have since built a career in Digital Risk Consulting and Assurance.

One of the things I’m most grateful for is that, although chronic illness shaped a significant part of my childhood and teenage years, those limitations didn’t define my adulthood. Today, I have an active and social life, surrounded by friends and family, and I’ve developed a real love for fitness and kickboxing — something I never take for granted.

Life hasn’t always been straightforward, but I’ve learnt that a difficult chapter doesn’t mean your whole story will be difficult.

When I think about what TWC gave me, I think of far more than an education. I think of lifelong friendships, resilience, confidence, independence and the people who stood beside me when I needed them most.

The teenager I was at TWC could never have imagined the life I have today. And when I look back, it’s not the challenges I remember most — it’s the people who helped me through them.

To my friends, teachers and staff: thank you. Your kindness made more of a difference than you will ever know.

Did you know there is a remarkable piece of history housed at The Wykeham Collegiate — a plaque made from a piece of the original foundation wood associated with Wi******er Cathedral in England.

To understand its significance, we travel back to Wi******er in the early 1900s.

Built on waterlogged ground, Wi******er Cathedral's foundations began to fail, with serious cracks appearing in the building. There were fears that this magnificent piece of English history could collapse.

Then came William Walker. A professional deep-sea diver, Walker worked beneath the Cathedral between 1906 and 1911, often around six metres underwater and in almost complete darkness. Working largely by touch, he placed thousands of bags of concrete beneath the foundations, helping to stabilise the Cathedral. William Walker helped save Wi******er Cathedral.

During this work, original timber from the ancient foundations was uncovered. A piece was made into a commemorative plaque and presented to Wykeham School.

Today, that plaque is in the care of The Wykeham Collegiate in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

And this is what makes it so special. A piece of Wi******er's history travelled thousands of kilometres across the ocean — from England to South Africa — and became part of the heritage of The Wykeham Collegiate.

It also carries a connection to William of Wykeham, Bishop of Wi******er and a great advocate for education, whose name and legacy live on through Wykeham institutions.

The plaque is more than an historical artefact. It is a tangible link between Wi******er and Pietermaritzburg; England and South Africa; the past and the present.

From Wi******er Cathedral in England, to Wykeham School, and now treasured by The Wykeham Collegiate in South Africa.

“I’m Angela Uys from the TWC Class of 1994. I recently turned 50, and boy, do I have some stories to tell!

In 2001, I got married and soon became a mom to twins, Cloé and Matthew, followed two years later by my son, Ross. They remain my greatest accomplishments and biggest blessings. Today, Cloé lives in Dubai, while my boys are in Stellenbosch and Cape Town, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

Life hasn’t always followed the path I imagined. I divorced in 2018, but today I’m happily engaged to my best friend. Looking back, I wouldn’t change the road I’ve travelled — every twist and turn has shaped who I am.

One of my hardest chapters was losing two of my brothers to su***de. It taught me the importance of speaking openly about mental health and, most importantly, asking someone, ‘How are you?’ — and genuinely listening to the answer. Sometimes people don’t need solutions; they simply need someone to listen.

I never went on to study after school. Instead, I like to say I attended the University of Life! Entrepreneurship became my career, bringing successes, failures, new beginnings and plenty of lessons — including starting businesses during COVID.

I’ve learnt that your word is your honour, that integrity and how you treat people matter, and that sometimes saying NO is the right choice. Not every opportunity is the right opportunity.

Today, I’m incredibly proud to run two businesses: my online ladies’ boutique, STELLA ROSE BRANDS, and my online ready-made meal business, THE LITTLE SICILIAN.

Looking back, I realise how much TWC shaped me. Education isn’t only found in textbooks — it’s in the people we meet, the values we learn, the friendships we make and the experiences that shape us.

If I could leave my fellow Old Girls with a few words, they would be:
💛Never take your mum for granted.
💛Ask someone how they are — and listen.
💛Keep your word.
💛Don’t be afraid to say no.
💛And when life knocks you down, get up, dust yourself off and start again.

At 50, I feel incredibly blessed to have been part of TWC and to have shared those years with such wonderful women.

Here’s to our stories, successes, mistakes, families, friendships — and everything still to come! 💙💛🤍

A Gift That Has Come Full Circle | The Class of 1997 💙💛🤍

Some school gifts become more meaningful with every passing year.

When the Class of 1997 left The Wykeham Collegiate, they donated their Bronze School Hat to the school. Thirty years ago, it became part of the history of TWC — and today, it has a very special place in the TWC reception area, where it welcomes every visitor who walks through our doors.

What was once part of their everyday school life has become a lasting reminder of a generation of girls who passed through TWC.

And next year, in 2027, the Class of 1997 will celebrate 30 years since leaving The Wykeham Collegiate.

Thirty years of friendships, memories, achievements, challenges, adventures and lives shaped by the years they spent at TWC.

There is something special about school gifts and memorabilia. A hat, blazer, badge, photograph or school book can become so much more than an object. With time, it becomes a piece of history — a tangible connection between the girls who came before and those who walk the same corridors today.

The Class of 1997’s Bronze School Hat is now doing exactly that.

Thirty years ago, it was theirs. Today, it belongs to the story of TWC — proudly displayed in reception and welcoming each new generation of visitors.

As we look forward to celebrating the Class of 1997’s 30-year milestone in 2027, we celebrate not only their memories, but the wonderful tradition of Old Girls leaving a little piece of their school story behind.

Because some school gifts really do stand the test of time.

Jessica (Jess) Hirschowitz (TWC Class of 2017) attended both the Junior and Senior Schools at TWC, matriculating in 2017. Her years at TWC played an important part in shaping the person she is today, leaving her with treasured memories and friendships that have stood the test of time.

After matric, Jess began a Bachelor of Biological Sciences at the University of Pretoria, before discovering her passion for physiotherapy and making the switch after her first year. She went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy with distinction, followed by a year of community service in Umphumulo, KwaZulu-Natal.

Today, Jess calls Cape Town home, where she works as a physiotherapist in private practice. She has recently added another string to her bow, qualifying as a Pilates instructor and teaching classes alongside her physiotherapy career. 🧘🏼‍♀

Outside of work, Jess loves keeping active through sport, travelling and spending time with family on the farm back in KZN. And, of course, she still makes time for her TWC girls — a friendship group that has remained strong long after leaving the school gates.

With her 10-year reunion on the horizon, Jess is looking forward to reconnecting with old friends, reminiscing about the good old days and reliving some of those special TWC memories.

We recently caught up with Ntombibuyile Mazibuko (TWC Class of 2014) to find out where life has taken her since leaving The Wykeham Collegiate.

After matriculating, Ntombibuyile went on to study Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Pretoria, followed by her community service year at a hospital in the Free State. This experience provided her with valuable clinical exposure, working with people from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of communication and language needs.

Since then, Ntombibuyile has worked across government and private school settings, developing extensive experience supporting children with speech, language, communication and learning needs. She has also worked closely with educators, occupational therapists, healthcare professionals and families to provide holistic and inclusive support.

While children remain a particular passion, Ntombibuyile’s work extends far beyond the classroom. She is passionate about community-based Speech and Language Therapy, supporting both children and adults to develop communication skills and participate more confidently in everyday life. She also works with healthcare professionals, sharing practical strategies to strengthen communication between healthcare workers and the communities they serve.

Today, Ntombibuyile is the founder of Samukele Multilingual Speech Therapy, her private practice based in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Through partnerships with schools, including St Stithians, she provides inclusive Speech and Language Therapy within educational settings while continuing to support families and communities beyond the school environment.

A particularly important part of Ntombibuyile’s work is multilingualism. She is passionate about providing support that recognises an individual’s home language, culture and community, believing that communication support should be culturally responsive, inclusive and meaningful.

We recently caught up with Lauren Hanbury-King (TWC Class of 2020) to hear about her journey since leaving The Wykeham Collegiate — and what an incredible journey it has been!

After matriculating from TWC, Lauren followed her passion for nursing and went on to study a Bachelor of Nursing Science at the University of Pretoria, graduating in December 2024. Nursing had always been close to her heart, with both her mother and grandmother having pursued careers in nursing. Caring for people during some of their most vulnerable moments felt like a natural calling.

Following graduation, Lauren was fortunate enough to spend three months experiencing a ski season in Aspen, Colorado, before returning to South Africa to begin a one-year contract completing her community service as a nurse.

For her community service year, Lauren chose to work at Isilimela Hospital, in the heart of Pondoland — one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and remote areas along the Transkei coast, near Port St Johns.

Living and working in such a rural environment challenged Lauren in ways she could never have anticipated, teaching her resilience, independence and the importance of using her own initiative. She also came to appreciate the beautiful simplicity of life and the warmth of the Xhosa people. Her year at Isilimela Hospital became one of the most life-changing and unforgettable experiences of her life so far.

With the money she saved during her time in the Transkei, Lauren then embarked on another adventure — three months travelling through Southeast Asia, visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Indonesia. 🌏✈️

Among her many highlights were completing the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam, exploring Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and waking up at midnight to hike up Mount Bromo in Indonesia in time to watch the sunrise.

Now back home, Lauren is looking forward to spending some time catching up with family and friends before hopefully making the move to England, where she hopes to continue her nursing career in the new year.

Looking back, Lauren says she treasures her years at TWC and continues to keep in regular contact with many of her school friends.

We are so proud to see where life has taken you, Lauren! 💙💛🤍
