Another talent that will be gracing the Kwasuka Sukela: Building Bridges 2024 stage at Shuku’s Greenleaf Estate this Sunday is Zinhle Madela. An inspiring figure in South African music, culture, and community development. Known affectionately as the “Kasi Queen,” she is a singer, songwriter, social entrepreneur, and community advocate whose work spans art, culture, and social upliftment. Her unique sound, which she dubs Maskandi-Soul, bridges traditional Zulu music with modern Afro-pop, creating a musical style that is as vibrant and multifaceted as her own story.
Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Zinhle grew up immersed in the sounds and traditions of Zulu culture. From a young age, she was surrounded by the rich, soulful melodies of Maskandi, gospel, and African folk music, which would later become foundational to her own musical expression. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep pride in her heritage, which she expresses through her music and work in the community.
Zinhle’s academic background is as diverse as her career. She holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree in Community Development and Psychology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where she also became active in social initiatives. This education not only equipped her with knowledge but also strengthened her passion for community empowerment, a theme that runs through both her artistic and philanthropic endeavours.
Some of her notable achievements include winning the JOOX SA competition, which earned her an opening act slot for Mafikizolo, one of South Africa’s top Afro-pop groups. In 2014, she was also part of the champion team on Mnet Mzansi Magic’s Clash of the Choirs, a significant milestone that helped bring her voice to a wider audience.
Zinhle’s accolades extend beyond music into social impact. She was named a top 40 UKZN Inspirational Student and has received awards such as the UKZN Campus HIV & AIDS Support Unit Best Creative Campaign Coordinator Award. In addition, she served as the Road Safety Ambassador for the eThekwini Transport Authority, embodying her commitment to community advocacy and youth empowerment.
