Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is extremely grateful to Motus Isuzu for the generous sponsorship of an Isuzu double-cab 4x4 bakkie for use by the Regional Marine Ecologist, Santosh Bachoo. The vehicle will be instrumental in supporting coastal and marine conservation initiatives, especially the Nesting Leatherback and Loggerhead Turtle Monitoring Programme that Ezemvelo undertakes annually on the beaches of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. We also acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of Tim Neary and Liezl Kok, of the Turtle Trust, who facilitated this arrangement and sponsored the insurance premiums for the vehicle.

We look forward to a long and rewarding partnership with both Motus Isuzu (Isando) and The Turtle Trust in advancing coastal conservation efforts in KwaZulu-Natal.

Session 3 - ONE HEALTH: STATE OF ABSORBENT HYGIENE PRODUCTS (AHP) IN SOUTH AFRICA

"One should only move waste up the hierarchy if the social, environment and economy benefit doing so, out weight the social, environment and economic cost of landfilling"

*Absorbent hygiene product- waste disposable infant diapers,is growing problem in relation to household waste disposed to land fills, Open spaces in our communities are filling with AHP that carnage the environment.
*Absorbent Hygiene Product AHP present a health risk.
*1.4 diapers sold per year ( Research)

Solving the growing AHP environment problem in South Africa is going to require:
-Sound evidence,
- A systems approach,
- Collaboration across various stakeholders,
- Product design,
- Recycling,
- Safe collection and disposable.

Research conducted
Study area Durban: Johanna road and Blackburn village-

Dumping site was identified in the area:
AHP (Diapers, wipes, feminine products was the largest by weight and amount of waste collected.

AHP predominantly dumped in access road, public bins near access road and dumping location to collect AHP, waste already installed in Johanna (inhlanzeko bins)

On International Biodiversity Day 2023 we ask, "What are the 5 key drivers of Biodiversity Loss"?
- Changes in land and sea use;
- Direct exploitation of organisms;
- Climate change;
- Pollution;
- and invasion of alien species.
We can all do something about one of the above, and if we work together, we can

What are some things you are doing to , or why is Biodiversity important to you?
