5TH Annual Gender Based Violence Awards 2026

On the 30th of May 2026,our very own Linda Mtshali has done it again! Coming second in the category of "Best Female GBV Activist" at the 5th Annual National Gender Based Violence Awards held at the New Hotel OR Tambo.

These awards honor the Champions of Change Nationally— and Linda is exactly that.

In her words: "This award is not mine . It belongs to all volunteers, partners, GBV survivors, and those we lost to GBV."

The fight doesn’t stop here. Linda continues to raise awareness nationwide and beyond, calling on all of us to join until no more lives are lost to GBV.

Enough is enough.

27 May 2026 | Pietermaritzburg High Court 💜

Today, the court was filled with people who refused to be silent.
Community members stood together for Nikki and Brooklyn — mother and daughter taken by GBV.

Shouting on top of their voices, they delivered one message:
"Enough is enough. Justice must prevail."

Thank you to everyone who came out, stood firm, and made sure the victims were heard.
This fight doesn’t end here. We keep showing up until justice is served.

TOMORROW WE SHOW UP FOR NIKKI & BROOKLYN 💜

The GBV court case for the late Nikki & Brooklyn resumes tomorrow at the Pietermaritzburg High Court at 8:30 AM.

If you’re not working, come out in your numbers.
If you only have an hour, come for that hour.
Your presence shows support. Your voice demands justice.

Men — your voice holds a lot of weight in this moment. From now until the end of the trial, we need you standing with us.

We walk for them. We stand for justice. We won’t be silent.
Let’s continue walking this journey together.

JUSTICE DENIED. VOICES ERASED 😔.

837 r**e cases scrapped off the court roll due to "communication breakdown".
12+ GBV cases struck off the roll every month.
Only 8% of reported r**es lead to conviction.
1 in 3 women experience GBV.
Over 50% of survivors never report the abuse.

This is what silenced by the system looks like.

At Walk A Mile Foundation, we refuse to let survivors stay silent. We walk with them, help them access protection orders, and create spaces where they can speak without fear.

It's time to break the cycle. Stand with survivors. Stand with us.

“I wasn’t shouting into the dark.”

For nearly 20 years, Pietermaritzburg activist Linda Mtshali has stood with survivors — helping with protection orders, running food and toiletries drives, and creating safe spaces to speak without fear.

Now, the founder of The Walk A Mile Foundation has been invited to the National GBV Awards in Gauteng on 30 May. She says the recognition belongs to every survivor and grassroots activist in KZN.

Read her story and how you can support her trip here @ The Witness : [https://witness.co.za/news/2026/05/25/i-wasnt-shouting-into-the-dark-says-local-gbv-activist/]

Mtshali told The Witness that her activism was born from personal pain after surviving abuse and losing her sister to gender-based violence
