Every Thursday at Lifeboat, something special happens. 👩‍🍳❤️

Our Thursday Cooking Class gives people who attend Lifeboat the opportunity to learn, cook together, build skills and enjoy a meal they’ve helped prepare. So when we were invited to take part in the Midlands Cake Picnic at Mount Verde Estate, our cooking class team decided to take on a rather ambitious challenge — baking a cake that told the story of Lifeboat. 🎂

There were three collapsed wafer houses, a troublesome roof and plenty of improvising along the way! 😂 But every detail was chosen with meaning — from the washing line and bathing area to the herbs and vegetables grown at Lifeboat.

The finished cake was more than just something to eat. It was a little piece of the Lifeboat story, created by the people who experience it.

A heartfelt thank you to the Mount Verde team for inviting us to be part of the Midlands Cake Picnic and for giving our Thursday Cooking Class team the opportunity to share their creativity. ❤️

Sometimes the biggest questions come from the smallest voices.
"But where are their families?"
"Where do they sleep?"

These were just some of the thoughtful questions asked by the Grade R and Junior Primary learners at Cowan House in Hilton recently as they learned about homelessness and what it means to care for people whose lives look very different from their own.

Rather than ending the conversation there, they turned compassion into action. Families generously donated food, toiletries and clothing, while the children spent 67 minutes washing, peeling and chopping fresh vegetables that will help prepare meals for people supported through Life Changer.

We couldn’t answer every difficult question they asked. But we could show them that when someone is hurting, we don't have to look away—we can do something.

A heartfelt thank you to the learners, teachers and families of Cowan House for raising children who are learning that kindness isn't just something we talk about. It's something we do. 💚

They say it takes a village... and this Mandela Day, our village showed up in the most beautiful way. ✨

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave so generously to help restore dignity and hope to those we serve.

🥪 Willowton Group for delicious sandwiches, crisps and much-needed shoes.
🥪 Emeris Pietermaritzburg for preparing fresh sandwiches.
🧴 TET/VET College Plessislaer for toiletries and clothing
🛍️ The Legal Practice Council for clothing, cosmetics and grocery donations.
Every sandwich made, every bag packed and every donation shared reminded someone that they are seen, valued and cared for.

Every donation carried a simple but powerful message: YOU MATTER. Thank you for helping us share that message with our community this Mandela month and every month thereafter.
