When the Holy Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬ ascended beyond the heavens on the night of the Miʿrāj, when he reached a station beyond the comprehension of creation, Almighty Allāh did not introduce him by kingship, power, or worldly titles. Allāh Almighty said:

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِ

Subḥāna alladhī asrā bi ʿabdihī

“Pure is He Who took His beloved servant by night…” (Qur’ān 17:1)

The greatest honour was ʿAbdiyyah — complete servanthood to Allāh.

Years later, on the burning plains of Karbalā, Imām Ḥusayn (عليه السلام) stood carrying the blessed blood of the one who had journeyed to the ʿArsh. He showed mankind that true servanthood is not weakness — it is the highest form of strength.

The one who belongs completely to Allāh cannot be purchased by power, silenced by fear, or made to bow before injustice.

Karbalā was not merely a battle of swords; it was the manifestation of ʿAbdiyyah. A servant of Allāh standing with truth, even when the price was everything beloved — family, companions, comfort, and life itself.

Imām Ḥusayn (عليه السلام) taught humanity that there comes a moment when truth demands sacrifice — when one must stand against oppression even if it means sacrificing one’s kith and kin, literally and metaphorically.

Do not try to place those who have reached the station of ʿabduhū under the microscope of ordinary understanding. The ocean cannot be measured with a cup, and the people of Allāh cannot be understood only through the limits of worldly vision.

The path that began with ʿabduhū wa rasūluhū reached Karbalā through the bloodline of that same Messenger ‎ﷺ‎‬ — reminding humanity forever:

To become the ʿabd of Allāh is not to lose yourself.

It is to become free from everything besides Allāh.

What is an ʿabd? We say: wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhū wa rasūluhū. Now, as ʿabduhū, the Holy Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬ is greater in rank than rasūluhū and therefore we affirm this first. This personal characteristic as ʿabduhū is greater in merit than the great function of rasūluhū. Therefore, in the Miʿrāj, Almighty Allāh uses the word ʿabdī – My servant. To become the ʿabd of Allāh is to become a king! Not to be debased as some of our people believe! Some people say that they wish to protect the Tawḥīd and therefore they insult others and even the Holy Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬. That Tawḥīd is only a formal and lifeless idea and nothing beyond that.

Iqbal has said: ‘If I become the slave of Allāh and I cannot develop myself in status, then I don’t need to be His slave!’ Everybody does something for some benefit – it is human nature. If I serve a wealthy human being and he becomes pleased with me, then he converts my poverty into wealth. If he is a possessor of knowledge, then he converts my ignorance into knowledge. What is this ‘god’ of these people, that you become his ʿabd and you continue to become debased! This was not taught by the Holy Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬. This is their own crooked way of thinking, due to ignorance!

Let me remind you of a ḥadīth, accepted by all the great imāms, but not by the ‘pygmies’ of this era. The Holy Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬ says that Almighty Allāh says:

My servant, when he (or she) accomplishes all the farāʾiḍ and then seeks My nearness through optional virtues, I make him My beloved. And when I come to love him, I become his ears with which he hears, I become his eyes with which he sees, and the hands with which he holds and the feet with which he walks and the tongue with which he speaks. (Bukhārī)

And the muḥaddith, Bayhaqī, added: ‘… and the mind with which he thinks.’

‘My life is passed mostly in agony and anguish because I am one of the soldiers of Islām on the battlefield who always has to face problems. I have to face those mighty anti-Islāmic forces arrayed against Islām all over the world. In addition, I have to face Muslim ignorance, apathy and internal bickering over trivial issues while the enemy is blasting our fortress.

The enemy is taking away our best asset and the very flower of our nation is being kidnapped – the Muslim youth! Muslim youth is leaving the fold of Islām in utter frustration in all the countries of the world. The apparently pious preachers of Islām are inviting Muslims to waste their energies on fighting amongst themselves.
Most Muslims are considered to be practising Muslims but tend to regard Islām as a cult, and not as a comprehensive way of life. According to us it is constituted of certain rituals and ceremonials, and hair-splittings about aqāid is where it ends. We do not consider the moral value of life because we have divorced religion from morality. Observe how far our devotional piety is divorced from our morality.

🌹 REFLECTIONS ON KARBALA 🌹

Paraphrased from the writings of Maulana Prof. Dr. Fazlur Rahman Ansari رحمه الله

Muharram does not merely mark the beginning of a new year. It calls the Muslim conscience to remember a sacrifice that gave meaning to faith, justice, and moral courage.

Imam Husayn عليه السلام did not rise for power, wealth, or worldly honour. As the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he already possessed a rank and dignity beyond measure. His stand was for principle. When the moral and political values of Islam were threatened, he offered the greatest charity possible — his own noble life.

Karbala teaches that truth cannot be measured by numbers, armies, or worldly power. A single voice raised for justice can outweigh an empire built upon oppression.

The martyrdom of Imam Husayn عليه السلام reminds us that leadership is a trust, not a family inheritance; that human dignity must be protected; and that believers are duty-bound to resist injustice in whatever form it appears.

Our tears for Karbala are meaningful only when they inspire action. To mourn Imam Husayn عليه السلام is to stand with the oppressed, assist the poor, oppose corruption, and strive to build a society founded upon justice, compassion, and moral responsibility.

Every Muharram asks us the same question: Are we merely remembering Karbala, or are we living its message?

‎اللهم أرنا الحق حقاً وارزقنا اتباعه

Āmīn.

We are preparing for Muharram, ‎إن شاء الله‬.

One of the three historic symbols commemorating the Martyrs of Karbala, brought to South Africa by Fakir Soofie Bawa (رحمه الله), is being readied once again. The three are located in Riverside, Cape Town, and Pietermaritzburg, following the methodology of Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti.

No one is compelled to attend, yet these commemorations continue to draw thousands who gather out of love for the Prophet ﷺ and his blessed family.

Islam prohibits idols and statues as objects of worship, but not symbols of remembrance. The Ka’bah, Maqam Ibrahim, Safa and Marwa are all symbols through which deeper meanings are recalled. Throughout human history, both religious and non-religious communities have used symbols, slogans, and ceremonies to preserve memory, identity, and ideals.

Symbols are never the destination. They are signposts pointing towards something greater. Their value lies in the truths they represent.

Reflect for a moment. The hand has five fingers. The foot has five toes. We possess five primary senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Islam stands upon five pillars. Just as our physical senses help us perceive the outward world, there are spiritual realities that help us perceive deeper truths.

Among the most beloved souls connected to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are the Panjtan Pak: Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyida Fatima, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn (رضي الله عنهم أجمعين).

The symbol of the blessed hand is known in Persian as the Panja. We kiss this symbol not because of metal or wood, but because it reminds us of the blessed hand of Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) that refused to submit to tyranny. It reminds us of the hand of Hazrat Abbas (عليه السلام), severed while striving to bring water for Sayyida Sakina (رضي الله عنها).

Symbols fade. The values they represent endure.

Remember: a fatwa is an opinion and not a revelation. To you your Mawlana; to us, our Khwaja is sufficient.
