Dear Minister Gayton McKenzie,
I write to you on behalf of many persons with disabilities who continue to face significant barriers to participation, development, and recognition within the South African sporting landscape.

Sport is a powerful tool for nation-building, social cohesion, empowerment, and economic development. However, despite South Africa's commitment to equality and human rights, many athletes and sporting codes for persons with disabilities remain marginalized and under-resourced.

Persons with disabilities continue to experience exclusion in various ways, including:
Insufficient Funding
Disability sporting federations often receive limited financial support compared to mainstream sporting codes.

Athletes are frequently required to self-fund training, equipment, travel, and competition participation.

Many sports fields, training centres, and recreational facilities are not fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Those that are accessible are not easy to obtain for use.

Rural communities are particularly disadvantaged due to limited infrastructure.
Limited Talent Identification and Development,
There are few structured programmes aimed at identifying and nurturing young athletes with disabilities.

Schools and community organisations often lack resources to introduce disability sport yet we have you as the minister who can implement that and have designated amount of funding and resources.

Inadequate Media Coverage
Achievements of athletes with disabilities receive significantly less media attention than mainstream sporting events.
This reduces sponsorship opportunities and public awareness.

Persons with disabilities are often absent from decision-making bodies, sporting committees, and leadership positions.
Their voices are seldom heard when policies and programmes are developed, such are done on their behalf and they have to follow.

Adaptive sporting equipment is costly and often inaccessible.

*16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM:*

*November 25 - December 10*

Today, we mark the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism, a global campaign that calls for an end to violence against women and children. As the Liberation of Disabled Peoples' Abilities, we recognize that people with disabilities, particularly women and girls, are disproportionately affected by violence, marginalization, and exclusion.

This year's theme, "UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls," resonates deeply with our mission to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all. We believe that disability is not a barrier to equality, and that every individual deserves to live a life free from violence and discrimination.

Throughout these 16 days, we will be highlighting the intersectional experiences of women and girls with disabilities, and amplifying the voices of disabled women and girls who are leading the charge against violence and inequality.

Join us as we march, advocate, and educate ourselves and others on the importance of inclusivity, accessibility, and equality for all. Together, we can create a world where every individual, regardless of ability, can thrive and reach their full potential.
