September is Wills Month

Where there is no Will, there is chaos.

A Will is more than a legal document — it is a way of protecting your home, your assets, your loved ones and the legacy you leave behind.

At BESG, through our Livelihood and Tenure Security Programme, we believe that everyone should have access to simple, practical information about wills and estate planning. That’s why we provide training throughout the year, particularly to vulnerable and low-income communities.

We help communities understand the Wills Act, break down the process into simple language, provide practical guidance on drafting a legally accepted Will, and connect people with institutions that can assist with free will-drafting services.

Because planning ahead can help families avoid unnecessary disputes, uncertainty and estate-related challenges later.

18 SEPTEMBER | WEAR BLACK. STAND IN SOLIDARITY. 🖤

On 18 September, the Built Environment Support Group (BESG) stands in solidarity with those affected by Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

We wear black to remember those whose lives have been lost, to stand with survivors, and to call for a society rooted in safety, dignity, equality and justice.

GBVF affects individuals, families and communities. Ending it requires all of us to speak out, challenge harmful attitudes and work together to create communities where everyone can live free from violence and fear.

Today, we remember.
Today, we stand together.
Today, we speak out.
Today, we commit to change.

🌸 BESG BUZZ – AUGUST 2026 IS HERE! 🌸

This August, we celebrate Women’s Month by honouring the strength, resilience, leadership and achievements of women who continue to make a meaningful difference in their families, communities and society. 💜

In this edition of BESG Buzz, we celebrate inspiring women, entrepreneurship, community achievement and the power of opportunity — including the wonderful achievement of Nondumiso Ngubane, a Business Buddy from Khan Road Informal Settlement. 👏🏽✨

We also celebrate the beautiful spirit of Ubuntu through the generosity and support shown to the Mpophomeni community garden, and share highlights from the Women in Entrepreneurship series.

From community gardens to entrepreneurship, leadership and empowerment, this edition is a reminder that meaningful change begins when we stand together, support one another and take action. 🌱🤝🏽

Highlighting Women Who Help This Women's Month - A Big Thank You

To the wonderful ladies from Howick, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your incredible generosity in donating resources to support the Mpophomeni community garden. Your kindness is a beautiful reminder that the spirit of Ubuntu is alive and well, and it is people like you who make South Africa truly special.

BESG Empowers Zuzokuhle Community Through SDF and SPLUMA Workshops

The Built Environment Support Group (BESG) is currently facilitating Spatial Development Framework (SDF) and Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA) workshops with residents of Zuzokuhle, Ward 9, as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening community participation in local governance and development planning.

The workshops aim to equip community members with a better understanding of how spatial planning decisions are made, how land is managed, and how residents can actively participate in municipal planning processes that directly affect their communities.

Through interactive discussions and practical learning sessions, participants are gaining valuable knowledge on the importance of the SDF and SPLUMA in guiding sustainable development, improving service delivery, and ensuring that community voices are heard in future planning initiatives.

BESG believes that informed and empowered communities are better positioned to advocate for equitable development and hold local government accountable for inclusive and transparent planning.

The organisation remains committed to supporting communities such as Zuzokuhle by building knowledge, strengthening civic participation, and promoting meaningful engagement in municipal decision-making processes.

In this edition, we celebrate a remarkable 10 years of dedicated service by our colleague Nomtha, reflect on the impact of our Mandela Day book donation to The Witness Book Collection Drive, and highlight the ongoing water challenges faced by the residents of Zuzokuhle Informal Settlement.
