About yesterday at our AYP and KP Youth Focus Group on S*xual Reproductive Health and Rights, held in partnership with IPAS and LoveLife.

A huge shout out to everyone who came through — our 20 AYP & KP constituents from Mpumuza, Ashdown, Peacevale, Edendale, and Haywood.
Much appreciation to our partners: Wits Health Consortium, UKZN Ujamaa Centre, TB HIV Care for providing on-site healthcare services and psychosocial support, uMzansi Youth in Business, Arch Holdings, and a massive thanks to Ashdown Library for the space and continuous support.

We covered key SRHR topics including access to HIV/AIDS services, STI & TB prevention, treatment adherence, the Close the Gap campaign, GBV awareness to name a few.

As we always say… “Innovation is our currency, and we stay rich in ideas.”

REMEMBERING NTOMBENHLE MCHUNU (33) - EDENDALE (LAYCENTRE AREA)

Today, we mourn the tragic loss of our close friend and cherished community member, Ntombenhle Mchunu (33), whose life was violently cut short last Saturday 7 March 2027 in Edendale (Laycentre Area). This devastating event has left our community reeling.

Ntombenhle, who was expectant, was allegedly inalived by her boyfriend, who subsequently took his own life following the incident.

As ILORA, we express our deepest condolences to the Mchunu family and all loved ones affected by this heartbreaking incident. We are deeply concerned by the escalating violence against women, particularly at the hands of those who should provide love and security.

This tragedy is a brutal reminder of the ongoing scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and domestic violence crisis in our society. We reiterate our unwavering stance:

Zero Tolerance: We condemn this act and any form of violence against women, children and vulnerable groups in the strongest possible terms.

Immediate Action: We call upon law enforcement to act urgently in addressing intimate partner violence, ensuring domestic disputes do not end in tragedy.

Call for Help: We urge anyone living in an abusive relationship to reach out for support, and for neighbours and community members to report abuse.

Let us stand together against the scourge of GBVF. No one deserves to live in fear.
Rest in Peace, Ntombenhle.

This week we had the honour of being part of launch of the “In God We Move and Live” book, a publication and initiative by the KZN Christian Council in partnership with Foccisa Health & Gender Justice Network, The Other Foundation, LGBTQIA+ and faith networks including the UKZN Ujamaa Centre, Uthingo Network and Newcastle Prideful Legends among others.

This book centres and sheds light on the lived realities of LGBTQIA+ Christians across KwaZulu-Natal as they navigate faith and religious spaces while confronting exclusion, harmful theology, and the ongoing struggle for belonging.

We honour the LGBTQIA+ individuals who bravely shared their stories, your courage challenges silence and creates space for healing. We thank the pastors, faith leaders and every partner who chose to stand on the side of dignity and justice.

Yesterday we had the honour of being part of the launch of the 'In God We Move and Live' book, a publication by the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council.

This book reflects on the personal stories and lived realities of LGBTQIA+ Christians as they navigate faith spaces. Stories marked by rejection, marginalization, resilience, and hope. It also speaks to the painful reality of how Christianity and the Bible have too often been used as a weapon to justify exclusion which further perpetuates harmful stereotypes, discrimination, hate crimes, and violence against q***r bodies. At the same time, the book serves as an invitation to churches, faith leaders, and believers to listen deeply, reflect honestly, and open their hearts toward greater inclusion, justice, and affirmation.

This prestigious project was made possible through collaborations and partnerships with the Fellowship for Christian Councils in SouthernAfrica, The Other Foundation, UKZN Ujamaa Centre, various faith institutions, faith and LGBTQIA+ leaders, the broader LGBTQIA+ community, Newcastle Prideful Legends, and LGBTQIA+ organizations across all 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal, among others.

As we continue to engage and tap into faith spaces in the ongoing fight for inclusion, this serves as a reminder that we belong, for we are all created in God’s image, called by name, and held in divine love. Our presence in these spaces is not by permission of others, but by the grace of the One who formed us. Regardless of the barriers we face, we remain part of the body, rooted in faith, sustained by hope, and assured that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Working alongside rural community partners in Mpumuza.

Trans-led and rooted in building an integratory society in rural contexts and beyond. Our Director, Leoni Chamane supporting rural-based Mpilonhle CBO through skills transfer and systems strengthening, focusing on interventions that enable community organizations to become independent, resilient, and fully functional.

As a trans- and key populations-led organization, we understand the realities of marginalization, exclusion, and barriers to resources and funding. Our work centres movement building, creating inclusive spaces, and empowering communities with the skills to empower others so that organizations like ours can continue sustaining themselves and thrive.

“Yeah we here” is more than a theme for this year. It is a declaration that trans, q***r, and key populations exist, belong, and are part of the broader community. We are committed to building an integratory society where everyone can live with dignity in safe, inclusive spaces free from discrimination.

We invite partners, donors, and community members to walk this journey with us by investing in community-led solutions that last. Against all odds, we continue rising above adversities.

Greetings ILORA fam!

As we open the year, we reflect on our journey as an organisation. Against all odds operating without funding, we have managed to push through, remaining firmly at the centre of LGBTQIA+, Key Populations, and womxn’s issues.

We are proud to introduce our theme for this year: “Yeah We Here.”
Yeah We Here is a declaration of our presence — a reminder that we exist, we matter, and we are not going anywhere. It speaks to resilience, honouring the strength of communities who have survived violence, discrimination, and exclusion. Despite every challenge, we stand strong, a living testament to courage and endurance.
This theme is about reclaiming spaces and asserting that we belong everywhere in community life. It challenges systems that have historically shut out LGBTQIA+ people, Key Populations, and other marginalised and often overlooked communities.

Featured in this video is Papaoutai, a French-Congolese song inspired by Stromae meaning “Father, where are you?” in English. The song speaks to absence, longing, and unanswered questions, emotions many in our communities know deeply.

For many LGBTQIA+ people and Key Populations, family is not always defined by blood, but by those who choose us, protect us, and stand with us when systems, institutions, and even our own homes have failed us. Papaoutai reflects the grief of what was missing, while also pointing us toward the power of chosen family — the spaces we intentionally create to heal, belong, and grow.

As an organization, "Yeah We Here" means we show up for one another. We become the family, the safety, and the voice we once searched for. We honour our past, hold space for our pain, and move forward together visible, unshaken, and rooted in community.

For us as ILORA, we believe that no one is an island. Which is why we all have the right to live in a safe and integratory society. Which is why we work with allies such as traditional and faith leaders to name a few to ensure that is possible.

Be part of the movement by supporting our initiatives. Every contribution matters in ensuring we continue reaching the most rural communities

Have a fabulous New Year fam!

As we enter into a new year, we do so with deep gratitude and love for our community. Without community, there is no movement, no healing, no strength, everything we are and everything we continue to build is because of you. Thank you for always standing with us, believing in us, and walking this journey with us, even in the hardest moments.

Please be safe as you celebrate, and always remember: ILORA is your home, a safe space where you are seen, valued, protected, and affirmed exactly as you are. You belong here, always.
