Dr Nonhlanhla Ndlovu, South Africa's Deputy Director-General for HIV and AIDS, TB, Maternal, Child and Women's Health: AI Moves from Hype to Implementation

AI may be the breakout theme of , and the phrase *AI-powered* may soon require its own conference badge.

Dr Ndlovu brought the government's practical implementation perspective to the fore as one of the many voices shaping the conversation at , posing the question beneath the hype:

AI improve HIV outcomes at scale while protecting equity, privacy, community trust and local control?"

Dr Ndlovu delivered a compelling presentation during the session "AI on the Frontlines of the HIV Response: Design, Delivery and Data," held on Monday, 27 July 2026, from 09:30 to 11:00, and organised by PSI and the Wits Health Consortium.

While AI is everywhere, what does the evidence actually say? This satellite session moved beyond the hype to present findings and lessons from implementers and researchers integrating AI into real-world clinic workflows and community health programmes—not as standalone innovations, but as integral components of the care pathway.

Drawing on behavioural science, human-centred design, implementation research, and tens of thousands of real user interactions, presenters shared insights from the design, testing and rollout of AI tools that support clients throughout the healthcare journey, including what drives engagement and changes behaviour.

The session also explored what public health system managers and frontline healthcare providers need for these tools to work effectively at scale, and what it takes to move from pilot projects to fully integrated programmes. It was aimed at anyone interested in understanding what is working, what is not, and what the future of AI in the HIV response could look like.
