Smallholder farmers in rural areas face immense challenges in their farming activities from poor soils, lack of water for irrigation, poor infrastructure, crops being damaged by livestock etc. Through all these challenges they are never discouraged, they soldier on and make use of the little resources available to them to feed their households and sell to the market for income generation.
Halala🎉🎊 to Msinga farmers for their amazing work that has led them to secure a market for their produce✌.

On 16 August 2022 FSG farmers held a Community Task Team (CTT) meeting. In the meeting farmers were discussing the challenges that they are facing in the community gardens, successes that they have had and the assistance that they would like to receive in the future.
The meeting was a huge success, special thanks goes to Okhahlamba Local Municipality for allowing us to use one of their venues to host the meeting.

On 3 August 2022 Farmer Support Group farmers held a market day at Okhahlamba Local Municipality city center. This market day was a result of an initiative formed by FSG in collaboration with Okhahlamba Local Municipality, and Mahlathini Organics to create market access for smallholder farmers, as that is one of the major issues that smallholder farmers face. Through this initiative many smallholder farmers now have access to the market to sell their produce and subsequently generate income to meet their household needs, reduce hunger and poverty.
Here are some of the highlights

A marvelous day it was at the HCI Foundation Food Indaba! The event was held at the Thanda Community Project in Mtwalume on the 21st of July. The indaba celebrated the efforts of small scale farmers in combating poverty.

FSG is currently working with the HCI Foundation and several other organization on the Sustainable Food Security Initiative. The project aims to come up with a sustainable plan to improve food security and access to nutrient rich foods in resource poor communities.

FSG farmers from Bergville and uMsinga got a chance to exchange and share information with farmers from Mtwalume, Umthatha and Greytown. They also received expert information from industry leaders that were at the event.

Ways to manage pests and diseases in your garden.
1) Timely planting of crops to avoid the period when a pest does most damage.
2) Companion planting with other crops that pests will avoid, such as onion or garlic.
3) Using crop rotation to help break pest cycles and prevent a carry-over of pests to the next season
4) Providing natural habitats to encourage natural predators that control pests. Farmer should learn to recognize insects and other animals that eat and control pests
5) Plants that pest dislike are: Onion, garlic, tea. Chili, pawpaw, eucalyptus, mint, marigold, blackjack, sweet basil, and sun h**p to name a few
Depending on the pest or type of control, home-remedies might vary. Here are some examples:

a) Chilli and garlic spray - Grind 1 garlic bulb and 1 onion. Add 1 tablespoon of powdered chilli peppers. Stir into 2 litres of hot water. Leave the mixture to cool. Strain through a fine cloth and keep the liquid. Add 1 tablespoon of soft soap and stir well. How to use: Use as a spray for caterpillars.
b) Garlic, marigold and onion spray - Take 3 cloves of garlic, 2 handfuls of - marigold leaves, 2 large onions, 2 chilli peppers, add water and boil. Cool and dilute with four times the quantity of water. Stir constantly
c) Soap spray- Plain soap or washing up liquid dissolved in hot water makes a good spray against soft bodies insects like aphids. It will dissolve their shells and kill them.
