Political factions and cliques are often driven by individuals who seek influence and control rather than the advancement of organisational principles.
Factions seldom strengthen organisations. Instead, they divide membership, create systems of patronage, protect incapable leadership, and weaken internal democracy and discipline. In many instances, factionalism prolongs failed administrations and shifts organisational loyalty away from its founding values and towards factional interests.
Factionalism can be likened to a cancer within an organisation. If left unchecked, it gradually destroys unity, trust, and the effectiveness of organisational structures. Every faction may have its own colours and interests, but when these interests dominate, they alter the true identity and purpose of the organisation itself.
Ultimately, factional leaders may consider themselves victorious, yet their collective success often lies in distorting principles, fragmenting unity, and weakening the organisation they claim to serve.
True ideological debates and policy differences are healthy in any democratic organisation. However, factionalism frequently emerges not from genuine ideological contestation, but from greed, personal ambition, lack of capacity, and attempts to preserve failing leadership structures.
Unity built on principles, accountability, and service to members will always be stronger than unity built on patronage and factions. 🤞
