Janet’s Junction Community Hub

Janet’s Junction Community Hub We want to teach people how to become self-sufficient in order to boost their self esteem and in turn become more effective and productive citizens.

We gave been hard at work for over 5 years now. Join us on our journey as we continue to grow. Janet's Junction is not only about giving away meals. We aspire to help people uplift themselves - we want to give folks a hand but not a hand out. Some of the people who receive support from us help by cleaning the outside of the premises or contributing in various other ways. Children are encouraged to

keep the park clean, adults are asked to respect the facilities by queuing and waiting their turn with patience. Some of the adults receiving support give back to the community by participating in the Phoenix Neighbourhood Watch patrols or assist by logging Service Requests for the City of Cape Town to attend to various issues that need to be addressed.. Our main focus at the moment is building up our School Support group. Children are being left behind at school in classes that are too big for teachers to provide personal attention to stragglers. We aim to build a program that will assist some of these children by giving them focused attention in the areas that they need help in. We have 12 students at the moment who are in need of assistance with various subjects. This is being facilitated by access to MTN Online Classroom sessions, as well as hands on guidance from volunteers who come from the greater Milnerton community. All of the students have been given access to computers to gain some computer literacy skills. These students are keeping up with their school work and will in the longer term be paired with younger students who need help with their subjects. We hope to grow this group to 16 students - which is what our current resources allow for. The program is evolving organically and we are pleased with its progress. If there are any people who would like to assist by mentoring one or groups of students, please e-mail [email protected] or [email protected],

We are well into Term 2 of 2026 and our learning lab is buzzing!

Last term we decided to give two learners a small reward for their diligence in attendance and helpful attitudes.

*Lerato* for Being the Best Student of the term, for consistent attendance and enthusiasm:

ROBOTICS with Sai

Thabile and Lerato enjoyed their robotics sessions with Sai at the Learning Lab this past Monday.

These two turning up on a public holiday shows us that they really enjoy this very special opportunity to learn new things.

This time it was about a pendulum and how it works.

Thank you Robo Sai for the session!

A huge shout out to Royal Ascot Superspar for their unwavering support of our soup kitchen!

The relief and smiles we see every time we can hand out food to those in need, reminds us of your consideration for the community nearby and in some cases, elsewhere in Cape Town.

We are truly grateful.

A moment to honour Jason.

Three years ago, just days after Mandela Day, we lost Janet — the fierce, warm-hearted matriarch of our community kitchen. Her passing left a void — but her son, Jason, stepped up and filled it with quiet strength and relentless dedication.

Yesterday, for Mandela Day 2025, Jason was everywhere.
Packing sandwiches.
Keeping an eye on the people flowing through — over 100 community members, volunteers, and kids.
Lifting tables.
Setting up.
Packing down.
Ferrying eight thousand sandwiches back to his home — which will be distributed this weekend to those who need them most.

In the middle of the event, he even took sandwiches to children playing in the park in Phoenix.

And always by his side, steady and strong, was his wife Stacy — his anchor and support.

Jason, you carry your mother’s legacy not just in what you do, but in how you do it: humbly, wholeheartedly, and with a deep love for the community she poured her life into.

You deserve more than our thanks — you deserve a proper round of applause. 👏
