Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA)

Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) PSFA’s main aims are to reduce short-term hunger, enhance children’s learning ability through school feeding and increase school attendance. How can YOU help?

PSFA serves daily nutritious cooked meals to 33,012 learners affected by poverty attending 379 educational institutions, including schools (primary, high & special needs), ECDs, OVC safe parks and TVET colleges. The Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) is a registered non-profit organisation (002-878 NPO) established by the Rotary Club of Paarden Island, now Table Bay, to address childhood

hunger at schools in the Western Province of South Africa. PSFA has to date, provided over two billion nutritious meals to underprivileged school children, thus promoting a sound grounding for education, which is the key to everyone’s future. Hunger and malnutrition prevent the disadvantaged children on our feeding programme from learning. This leads to a lifetime of damage and continuation of the cycle of poverty – for the child, our society and our nation. PSFA currently provides daily nutritious cooked meals to a total of 34 942 learners at the following 413 educational institutions in the Western Cape:

25 185 learners at 149 primary, secondary and special needs schools
8 127 children at 254 Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs)
300 children at three Orphans and Vulnerable Children Centres (OVCs) safe parks and
1 330 students at seven Technical Vocational Education and Training Colleges (TVETs)

Over and above the ingredients supplied to each educational institution on our feeding programme, PSFA also provides gas stoves, gas bottles, gas when needed, pots, plates, eating spoons and cooking utensils. PSFA empowers and trains community members, usually unemployed parents, to prepare and serve meals at each school. All food stocks are stored at PSFA’s warehouse. PSFA contracts external transportation companies to ensure timely delivery of the ingredients to each school on our programme. PSFA employs Field Workers to manage, monitor and evaluate the proper implementation of our feeding at all the schools on our programme. Our Field Workers conduct regular site visits at their respective schools. Thanks to donor funding, PSFA has supplied 135 kitchens at schools that had inadequate facilities to prepare cooked meals. A donation of only R670 will enable PSFA to provide one hungry learner with a daily nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch while at school for an entire year. A donation of R71 will enable PSFA to provide the above for one month, and a donation of R20 100 will allow PSFA to feed a class of 30 learners for a year.

100% of all donations are allocated towards the direct cost of school feeding, PLUS all donations are tax-deductible! Visit our website, www.psfa.org.za, to make a secure online donation.

On Tuesday, 9 June 2026, the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) was honoured to participate in a special knowledge-sharing session hosted by WITH (Wholistic Interest Through Health), an international non-governmental organisation based in South Korea.

The session formed part of WITH's Africa Regional Conference in Cape Town and brought together approximately 20 leaders and regional representatives working across the African continent. As WITH continues to expand its efforts to establish sustainable school feeding models in Africa, the organisation invited PSFA to share insights from its 68 years of experience in combating child hunger in the Western Cape.

PSFA Director, Petrina Pakoe, delivered a presentation highlighting the organisation's history, guiding philosophy and operational approach to school feeding. She shared how PSFA has grown into one of South Africa's most respected school feeding organisations, providing nutritious meals to thousands of learners while building strong partnerships with schools, communities, donors and volunteers.

WITH is a group of food and nutrition experts committed to improving global health through a holistic approach to community well-being. The organisation has successfully implemented sustainable school feeding and nutrition programmes in countries including Mongolia, Cambodia, Tanzania, Madagascar, Myanmar and North Korea. It is also recognised for its role in supporting the Mongolian government in institutionalising a national school lunch programme.

The delegation expressed a keen interest in understanding the factors that have enabled PSFA to sustain its impact over nearly seven decades. Discussions focused on the organisation's operational strategies, community-centred approach and commitment to ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals that support their education and development.

The engagement provided a valuable opportunity for dialogue and learning, allowing participants to exchange ideas and explore practical solutions to child hunger. It also highlighted the importance of collaboration between organisations working towards a common goal: ensuring that children have the nourishment they need to learn, grow and reach their full potential.

PSFA is grateful to WITH for the opportunity to share its experience and contribute to conversations about sustainable school feeding across Africa. Together, organisations such as WITH and PSFA are helping to build a future where no child is prevented from learning because of hunger.
