𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬, 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
SAEP marked the first day of Arbor Week alongside learners at Bonga Primary School, creating a hands-on opportunity for young people to plant, learn and take action for their environment.
For SAEP, creating healthy, safe and supportive learning environments extends beyond the classroom. Planting trees helps schools become greener spaces while nurturing environmental awareness, responsibility and a sense of stewardship among learners.
We are grateful to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), as the custodian of forestry, for donating trees to SAEP. This partnership enables the schools we support to participate meaningfully in Arbor Week and gives more learners the opportunity to care for something that will continue to benefit their school and community.
Together, we are growing more than trees, we are nurturing healthier learning environments, environmental stewardship and a future where children can learn, grow and thrive.

At SAEP, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens when knowledge moves beyond the classroom and becomes an experience.
That is why we value 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥, 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.
Learning outside the classroom gives children the opportunity to see, touch, explore, question and connect what they have learned to the world around them. It transforms knowledge from something they are simply told into something they can experience and remember.
For us, an excursion is therefore more than just a day out. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦. It creates opportunities for curiosity, discovery and meaningful learning, particularly for children who may not otherwise have access to these experiences.
At SAEP, we want children not only to gain knowledge, but to experience learning in ways that unlock their potential and expand what they believe is possible.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝

30 learners from Imbasa Primary School recently visited the University of the UWC Nature Reserve Unit, where classroom learning was transformed into a meaningful outdoor experience. Through guided exploration of the reserve's rich biodiversity, learners became citizen scientists, observing, questioning, and discovering the natural world around them.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the University of the Western Cape for providing an inspiring learning experience that reconnects young people with nature. By nurturing environmental awareness and curiosity from an early age, we are helping to develop informed, responsible citizens who will play an important role in protecting our natural heritage for generations to come.

Every experience in nature plants the seed for a more sustainable future.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤.
Book ownership nurtures a love of reading, sparks imagination, builds social and emotional connections and creates joyful moments where children can lose themselves in a story. It all begins by capturing children while they are young starting with picture books, shared reading, and meaningful conversations.
In my conversation with Thembalethu Shangase, Executive Director at Book Dash, we explored why reading together is about far more than books. It is one of the simplest, yet most powerful, ways parents and caregivers can strengthen their relationship with a child while supporting healthy brain development, language, emotional wellbeing, and school readiness.
At SAEP, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Building a culture of reading from the earliest years is one of the greatest investments we can make in a child's future.
When children grow up surrounded by stories, they don't just learn to read they learn to imagine, connect, communicate and believe in their own potential.

Because a child cannot learn when they are battling illness, trauma, or limited access to healthcare.
In my conversation with Alexander Sittmann from SHAWCO, we explored why education and healthcare must work hand in hand to give every child the opportunity to thrive.
At SAEP, we believe that creating better educational outcomes starts with creating healthy, safe, and supportive environments where children can grow and learn. Healthy children are better able to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. By strengthening access to healthcare, we are strengthening educational outcomes and creating healthier, more resilient communities.

🌍 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔🌱
Today, learners from 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 spent an inspiring day at the University of the Western Cape Nature Reserve, connecting with nature and learning firsthand about the importance of environmental conservation.
Through interactive nature sessions, learners explored indigenous plant species, discovered the role of wetland ecosystems, and learned about the diverse wildlife that calls the reserve home. They also rolled up their sleeves and participated in 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, gaining practical skills while contributing to environmental stewardship.
Experiences like these help young people understand that protecting our environment is not just about learning it is about taking action. By nurturing curiosity, knowledge, and responsibility, we are growing the next generation of environmental leaders.

For parents, one of the most important messages is this, you are your child's first teacher. Today, the South African Education Project (SAEP) proudly hosted an 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞: “𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭.”The programme created an engaging space for learners to explore the importance of biodiversity, environmental responsibility, and sustainable action within their own communities. Through interactive discussions, a biodiversity quiz competition, and creative activities, learners actively participated in conversations about protecting the environment and building a more sustainable future.
A powerful highlight of the day was seeing learners write their own environmental pledges, committing themselves to taking action in protecting nature, conserving resources, and becoming responsible environmental citizens.

To celebrate participation and learning, three learners were awarded prizes for their outstanding performance during the biodiversity quiz activities.
Today’s engagement reminded us that meaningful environmental change begins with informed and empowered young people. By investing in environmental awareness among youth, we are nurturing a generation that understands the connection between biodiversity, community wellbeing, and global sustainability.

Choosing the right ECD centre is not just about care it is about ensuring children grow in safe, nurturing and stimulating environments that support healthy development during the most critical years of life.
In conversation with Zena Haynes from Centre for Early Childhood Development, we unpack why quality Early Childhood Development matters and why these conversations urgently need to 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗖𝗗 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 continue in our communities.
Research shows that by age five a child’s brain has developed rapidly, making early experiences critical to lifelong learning, behaviour and wellbeing. We cannot afford to get these years wrong.
