Our oceans sustain life, regulate our climate, provide food and support millions of livelihoods. Yet they face growing threats from pollution, climate change, and unsustainable practices.
At SAEP, we believe that environmental education plays a critical role in nurturing a generation that understands, values, and protects our natural world. Through environmental learning, excursions and conservation activities, we empower young people to become custodians of our planet.

This World Oceans Day, let us remember that every action counts. A healthy ocean means a healthier future for all.

🌍 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔🌱
Today, learners from 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 spent an inspiring day at the University of the Western Cape Nature Reserve, connecting with nature and learning firsthand about the importance of environmental conservation.
Through interactive nature sessions, learners explored indigenous plant species, discovered the role of wetland ecosystems, and learned about the diverse wildlife that calls the reserve home. They also rolled up their sleeves and participated in 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, gaining practical skills while contributing to environmental stewardship.
Experiences like these help young people understand that protecting our environment is not just about learning it is about taking action. By nurturing curiosity, knowledge, and responsibility, we are growing the next generation of environmental leaders.

In this conversation, I sit down with Mammuso Makhanya and faith shabangu from WordworksSA to unpack why play-based learning is so important in building strong early literacy foundations and what every parent should know about literacy. For parents, one of the most important messages is this, you are your child's first teacher. The simple everyday moments of talking, reading, singing, and playing together are helping to build the language and literacy skills your child will need for life.

Today, the South African Education Project (SAEP) proudly hosted an 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞: “𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭.”The programme created an engaging space for learners to explore the importance of biodiversity, environmental responsibility, and sustainable action within their own communities. Through interactive discussions, a biodiversity quiz competition, and creative activities, learners actively participated in conversations about protecting the environment and building a more sustainable future.
A powerful highlight of the day was seeing learners write their own environmental pledges, committing themselves to taking action in protecting nature, conserving resources, and becoming responsible environmental citizens.

To celebrate participation and learning, three learners were awarded prizes for their outstanding performance during the biodiversity quiz activities.
Today’s engagement reminded us that meaningful environmental change begins with informed and empowered young people. By investing in environmental awareness among youth, we are nurturing a generation that understands the connection between biodiversity, community wellbeing, and global sustainability.

Choosing the right ECD centre is not just about care it is about ensuring children grow in safe, nurturing and stimulating environments that support healthy development during the most critical years of life.
In conversation with Zena Haynes from Centre for Early Childhood Development, we unpack why quality Early Childhood Development matters and why these conversations urgently need to 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗖𝗗 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 continue in our communities.
Research shows that by age five a child’s brain has developed rapidly, making early experiences critical to lifelong learning, behaviour and wellbeing. We cannot afford to get these years wrong.

Access to primary health care and preventative health services is essential for children to thrive and succeed in school. When children are hungry or unwell, learning becomes extremely difficult. At the South African Education Project (SAEP), we take a child-centred approach across all our programmes, recognising that education, health, nutrition, and wellbeing are deeply connected. By supporting preventative healthcare and early interventions, we help ensure that children are healthy, supported, and ready to learn.

We are deeply grateful for our partnerships with SHAWCO and the City of Cape Town Department of Health, whose collaboration helps us extend essential health services to the communities we serve.

When Natural Sciences meets environmental consciousness, learning becomes unforgettable.

At Intaka Island, our Grade 6 learners from Khanya Primary School moved beyond textbooks and into living ecosystems.

Birds overhead. Indigenous plants underfoot. Wetlands alive with discovery.
Minds on. Hands on.

Seeing biodiversity up close transformed abstract lessons into lived experience. Learners did not just study environmental science, they felt it, explored it, and connected with it deeply.

This is what accessible, practical learning looks like.
And this is how we nurture environmental stewards for the future.
