Going green with the General: Xolani’s 250 volunteer milestone 🌳
When Xolani Ngcamphalala reaches a parkrun on a Saturday morning, there’s a good chance he’ll be helping to make the event happen. Affectionately known as “Genele”, or “the General” in English, the Mbabane parkrun Co-Event Director has now reached an impressive 250 volunteer duties.

A passion for parkrun in the fields of learning 🌳
Among the fields of learning at Seotlong Agriculture School in the Free State, a small parkrun community has been taking root. At the heart of it is event director Chabedi Maleme, whose commitment to the event has seen him move from parkrunner to volunteer, leader and one of the people who helps make sure the 5k happens every Saturday.

His story is not one of chasing volunteer numbers, but of believing in what parkrun can offer the learners and wider community: healthier lifestyles, connection, confidence and the opportunity to get involved. 600 volunteering milestones and counting: Gary Jackson leads the way 💜

From helping to establish Ebotse parkrun to volunteering in countless roles over the years, Gary Jackson has played a part in making parkrun happen for thousands of people.

On 10 October, Bronberrick parkrun was proud to welcome Gary as he reached an extraordinary milestone: 600 volunteer occasions, making him the first person in South Africa to achieve this. Celebrating the unstoppable volunteer spirit of Vanessa King 💛

For Vanessa King of Roodepoort parkrun, a 5k finish token is entirely optional when it comes to being the heart and soul of the event.

Vanessa’s parkrun story began as a supportive spectator, joining her husband Peter on his early runs between 2016 and 2018. Chronic asthma and painful hips prevented her from completing a full 5k herself, but her dedication to the morning routine never wavered. When Peter dove headfirst into parkrun tourism in late 2022, Vanessa was right there with him every single Saturday morning, defying the winter cold and summer heat alike. Three generations one parkrun tradition 🌳

parkrun has a wonderful way of bringing people together, and sometimes that connection stretches across generations, countries and family visits. For Roxy Kalpee of Century City parkrun, Saturday mornings have become a treasured opportunity to spend time with his children and grandchildren, whether they are together in Cape Town or joining him during family visits overseas.

From walking alongside his youngest granddaughter to running and volunteering with his teenage grandchildren, parkrun has given Roxy something he values just as much as the exercise: uninterrupted time together.
