Five reasons young people thrive as parkrun volunteers πŸŽ‰

This Youth Month, it’s a great time to reflect on the role young people play in shaping strong, connected communities. For high school learners, volunteering at parkrun offers more than just a way to complete community service hours, it’s an opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of something meaningful.

Whether it’s helping at the finish line, supporting participants on the course as a marshal, or simply showing up for others, volunteering at parkrun is a powerful way for young people to make every Saturday countπŸ‘‡

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and father figures in our parkrun community! πŸ’™

Many parkrunners discovered their love for movement because a dad, grandfather, uncle, coach, mentor, or father figure encouraged them to take that first step, jog, walk, or run.

Today, we celebrate the people who wake up early, cheer from the sidelines, volunteer when needed, share the journey, and inspire us to keep moving forward.

Whether you're walking, jogging, running, volunteering, or simply supporting others, thank you for the positive impact you make in the lives of those around you.

From all of us at parkrun South Africa, we wish you a wonderful Father's Day filled with family, friendship, and plenty of parkrun memories. πŸŒ³πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’š

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ A Father's Day "Did you know"?

Many young parkrunners discovered their love for movement because a dad, grandfather, or father figure brought them along to parkrun one Saturday morning.
What may have started as a simple walk, jog, volunteer role, or family outing often became something much bigger β€” a lifelong love of being active, spending time outdoors, and being part of a community.

On Father's Day, this Sunday, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, and role models who lace up their shoes, lead by example, and inspire the next generation to take that first step.

Sometimes the greatest gift a father figure can give isn't advice β€” it's simply showing up.

πŸ’š Happy Father's Day to all the father figures who have helped create parkrun memories, one Saturday at a time.

Walking in my father’s shoes: From parkrun to Comrades πŸ‘Ÿ

For many parkrunners, the journey starts with one simple Saturday morning 5k. For Comrades Marathon hopeful Lindokuhle Mashabane from Mapetla parkrun, it started with inspiration from the community around him.

Watching everyday parkrunners who had conquered Comrades made him realise that the dream was possible for him too. From his first parkrun in 2023 to completing his first Comrades in 2025, Lindokuhle shares how community spirit, volunteers, tired legs and Saturday morning consistency helped shape his running journeyπŸ‘‡
