A Beacon of Hope: Noorder Paarl High School Unveils New Wellness Hub’
By Meagan Daniels
Paarl, Western Cape – Noorder Paarl High School officially launched its new Wellness Hub, a facility designed to support the well-being of students and the broader community. The event highlighted the school’s commitment to addressing social and emotional challenges alongside academics.
The program featured the national anthem, an opening address by CM Mr. Cupido, a vote of thanks by Mrs. Baartman and learner Musa, and closing remarks by Ms. Le Grange, who ended the ceremony with a ribbon cutting and balloon release.
Principal Mrs. NC Arendse expressed gratitude: “We are very privileged that we were allocated and chosen.”
Ms. Le Grange echoed Mr. Cupido’s message: “We are here to break the cycle of poverty. Many learners come from poverty-stricken communities, and we want better for them.” She emphasized the hub’s philosophy: “Wellness begins here. It’s growing minds, hearts, and futures.”
Dr. Kemp, a social worker with the Department of Education, explained the hub’s purpose: “Whatever happens in the community spills over into the school: domestic violence, gang violence, bullying, r**e. These challenges hinder learning, and our social workers cannot reach every learner. The Wellness Hub expands psychosocial support and brings it closer to them.”
Arendse also noted the logistical barriers: “Learners live far away, with many in Paarl East. They’re not close to support services. The hub allows these services to come to school, giving easier access to learners and parents.”
Students described the hub as a “step into a better future,” a safe space for those without support at home, and “something really needed not only in schools but in communities.” One said: “It’s going to help communication because sometimes you can’t speak to your parents about everything.” (Translation: “The Wellness Hub will help our community, not just our school. Learners will reach their full potential and strive to break free from poverty.”)
Concluding, Mrs. Le Grange called it “a hub of hope... a beacon of wellness and a commitment by this community and the WCED. Each one of you will build a healthier, stronger, and more connected community.”
