Meet one of our Jonk Strandlopers, Tatum Booysen 🌿, as she shares her journey with the programme and the impact it has had on her life ✨

The Jonk Strandlopers programme was successfully piloted in 2025 thanks to the generous funding support from Nature Connect and Table Mountain Fund Small Grants, as well as the unwavering support from Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve
Through this programme, we were able to identify and work with 25 Grade 9 and 10 learners from various schools across Paarl.
Tatum has stood out as one of the learners whose commitment, passion, and enthusiasm have shone throughout the programme, and we are incredibly proud to witness her growth and journey. πŸ’™πŸ©΅πŸ’›

What started as a Jonk Strandlopers session turned into a powerful gathering that brought learners, teachers, tribal leaders, artists, and community partners together to explore Indigenous history, identity, and the power of language.

The event opened with a sacred ceremony led by the Hawequa /Xam tribe, followed by a moving Reeldans performance by the Nederburg Vastrappers. The atmosphere was rich with cultural pride, reflection, and connection.

We were honoured to hear from:
✨ Hybre Van Niekerk, who challenged the portrayal of Krotoa in history
🎨 Dieuwke-Jean Linee, who reimagined Krotoa through art
πŸ“ Gaireyah Fredericks, who brought the beauty of Kaaps poetry to life

Thank you to our incredible partners Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve ENJOY DRAKENSTEIN Noorder Paarl High School
for helping make this a truly memorable day.

This was more than just an event, it was a step in reclaiming our narratives and honouring Indigenous knowledge systems. πŸ’™πŸ©΅πŸ’›
