COMMUNITY CRIME ALERT

A recent increase in reported home burglaries in Paarl and surrounding areas has raised serious concern.

Residents are urged to strengthen home security, set alarms nightly, and check that alarms and security cameras work properly.

Secure bicycles and lock garages, tool sheds and caravans.

Criminals have reportedly entered homes at night through windows after removing Perspex burglar bars and windows from their aluminium frames.

The CPF urges residents to take the following precautions:
Set your alarm nightly, including when you are home.
Keep all doors and windows locked, and fit burglar bars to vulnerable entry points.
Add security measures, such as pop rivets, to reinforce vulnerable windows.
Consider linking motion-detection cameras to your alarm and security systems.

Report suspicious or criminal activity to your security provider or SAPS immediately. Do not confront suspected criminals.

If armed criminals confront you, put your life and your family’s safety first. Avoid resistance and unnecessary risks.

Remain vigilant. Keep your home secure and your family safe.

Housebreaking and theft are ongoing problems.
How Criminals Assess Your Property
Criminals may watch and scout properties to learn household routines and identify valuables. Bicycles left in the yard, garden equipment, tools, and sheds can reveal what is available and where it is stored.

Protect Yourself
Stay alert, keep valuables out of sight, and secure bicycles, tools, and sheds to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Vehicle Crime Awareness: Theft from motor vehicles remains one of the biggest concerns across all sectors in Paarl. Always lock your vehicle, close all windows, park in a secure and well-lit area, and never leave valuables, bags, electronics or other items visible inside—even for a short time. Be aware of remote jamming: always check that your vehicle is physically locked before walking away. Stay alert and report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.

DONATE RESPONSIBLY
Together, we can help people move forward—off the pavement and toward care.

Homelessness and vulnerable children on our streets affect the whole Paarl West community. The most helpful way to give is through registered charities that can provide food, blankets, care, and support where it is needed most.

Paarl West CPF kindly asks residents, visitors, schools, parents, and learners to avoid giving money or food directly to children or adults begging or illegal carguarding in the C*D, along Paarl Main Road, outside schools, at the van der Lingen Square carpark, or elsewhere in Paarl.

Please consider supporting PayPoint terminals at participating businesses make it simple for residents to give by card. Every contribution goes directly to accredited homeless shelters in Paarl, helping provide meals, hygiene items, support programmes, and day-to-day care.

Drakenstein Municipality is calling on residents to support the municipal area's homeless individuals responsibly and safely by making use of PayPoint terminals, which are now available at a number of Paarl businesses.

This initiative forms part of the Municipality's recently adopted Homelessness Policy and strengthens the local network of accredited overnight shelters that provide food, care and developmental support to the homeless.

At a recent meeting with Paarl schools and the South African Police Service (SAPS), network partners confirmed that cash handouts on the streets are contributing to an increase in both child and adult begging. There have also been incidents where children were robbed while begging, placing them at significant risk.

PayPoint terminals offer residents a safe, constructive alternative, ensuring support goes where it is most effective. Funds are not given directly to individuals on the streets, which helps to reduce dependency and improve safety.

PayPoint terminals at participating businesses allow residents to make cash or card contributions that go directly to two accredited homeless shelters in Paarl. The shelters use the donations for meals; hygiene items; developmental and support programmes; and operational needs.

The shelters report to Drakenstein Municipality as they use municipal facilities and submit their financial statements to the Municipality. The Western Cape Department of Social Development also monitors them. This ensures full transparency and responsible use of public contributions.

The PayPoint initiative forms part of the Municipality's long term strategy to reduce street begging; address the root causes of homelessness; provide humane, structured pathways off the streets; and build safer public spaces for children and adults.

Through responsible giving, residents can help ensure that vulnerable people receive the right support in the right place.
