Youth Day Speech:
“Our Turn”
Good morning everyone,
Today, 16 June, we remember Youth Day. In 1976, young people our age stood up for education, for dignity, for a voice. They were students with no weapons, only courage. They changed history.
18 years later we got democracy. But freedom isn’t just a date on a calendar. Freedom is what we do with it now.
So what’s “our turn” as the youth of today?
Our turn is to take education seriously, even when it’s hard. Those students died for the right to learn. Let’s not waste it.
Our turn is to build, not just break. We complain about unemployment, crime, and problems online. But the same energy we use to tweet can be used to start a business, code an app, plant a garden, or mentor a younger kid.
Our turn is to unite. The youth of 1976 didn’t ask “what language do you speak?” or “what township are you from?” They marched as one. Our strength is still in our unity - across schools, cultures, and backgrounds.
The leaders of tomorrow? That’s us. But we can’t wait for “tomorrow”. We must lead today. In our homes. In our classrooms. In our communities.
So let’s honor 16 June 1976 by living with purpose. Learn hard. Work hard. Love your country hard.
The youth of 1976 gave us our voice. Now it’s our turn to use it.
Amandla!
