Hi everyone! 😊

As part of World Mental Health Day, we will be hosting an in-person talk with on Sports Psychiatry with Dr James Burger at 17.30 on Thursday, the 13th of October at the Wolfson Lecture Theatre, IIDMM building at the Faculty of Health Sciences!

The highs and the lows of sport captivate us every weekend. Join us as we discuss the budding field of sport psychiatry, exploring athlete mental health and the psychology of performance, as well as the potential consequences of collision sport from concussion and repetitive head impacts that are gripping the media.👏

Dr James Burger (MBChB MMed MSc(SEM) FCPsych(SA) DMH PGDipHPE) is a psychiatrist who is also passionate about sports medicine and health professional education.
He previously worked as a sports medic and a team doctor at EP Rugby and False Bay Rugby Club, and completed an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Stellenbosch University.
He is now completing his registrar training time in psychiatry in the University of Cape Town circuit, where he was also a teacher and clinical educator.
Dr Burger has published some papers on a local and international level in the fields of psychiatry and sports medicine.

Upcoming In-Person Talk on Sports Psychiatry by Dr James Burger

Upcoming Annual General Meeting

Dear Psych Soc Members,

Thank you for being part of the society in 2022!

We will be hosting our annual general meeting (AGM) tonight, on Tuesday the 13th of September at 6.30pm on Microsoft Teams (link: https://tinyurl.com/4khxsn4b).

The AGM will include a brief report back of the society's activities for the year and to elect the new Psych Soc committee for 2023.

Joining the Psych Soc committee is a great way to share your interest in psychiatry, to experience some experience in leadership, work as a team and make connections and network with psychiatrists, researchers and other speakers involved!

International Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day is observed on the 9th of September every year.

FASD is the most common, preventable form of intellectual disability. There is no cure for this irreversible lifelong condition. Thankfully FASD is 100% preventable. No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy.

Upcoming in-person talk: Two Poles of Su***de Management

We are excited to announce an upcoming in-person talk, which will be our first collaboration with UCT Internal Medicine Society!

Titled "The Two Poles of Su***de Management", the talk will focus on providing insight into the management of suicidal patients through the lens of an emergency physician, Dr Zaayman and a psychiatrist, Dr Mpinda. The talk will take place TOMORROW on Wednesday, the 24th of August 2022 at 18:00 in the New Learning Centre (NLC) Lecture Theatre, UCT Health Sciences Campus

Please sign up prior to the talk with your UCT email to secure your spot as we will enforce maximum capacity of 40. Once you have signed up you will receive your confirmatory email on the 23rd of August (Tuesday).
Please arrive ± 17:45 for a 18:00 start, at New Learning Centre (NLC) Lecture Theatre on Health Sciences Campus (if you have signed up). Refreshments and snacks will be served!
