The Etafeni Centre

The Etafeni Centre Etafeni is a multi-purpose centre for children affected by HIV/AIDS and their caregivers in Nyanga,

The Etafeni Centre is situated in Nyanga, one of the oldest black townships in Cape Town. The community of Nyanga faces severe unemployment and high HIV rates. Once known as having the highest crime rate in Cape Town, Nyanga is slowly improving through the efforts of community members who are working hard to alleviate poverty and create job opportunities. WHAT WE DO

The Trust, in partnership with

the local community, has built a multi-purpose day care centre in Nyanga which prioritizes the needs of vulnerable children, and those who care for them. With over 12 different programmes, the Etafeni Centre is always busy and provides a beautiful space and shelter for members of the community. OUR VISION

The Etafeni Day Care Centre Trust has developed a replicable model of holistic sustainable community-based care for HIV affected and vulnerable children and their caregivers. We hope that the model will flourish beyond Etafeni in South Africa and all AIDS-affected developing countries to address the needs of vulnerable children and their communities. OUR STORE

As a part of our efforts, Etafeni runs a programme that trains HIV-infected mothers in beadwork, smocking, patchwork, and various other craft-making skills. The products are produced at Etafeni and sold locally and internationally, giving our HIV+ mothers an income.

Youth Day Commemoration – 26 June 2026
On 26 June 2026, the Kitchen and Property Department will host a Youth Day commemoration in honor of the courageous young people of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
As we remember their bravery and sacrifice, we also celebrate the voices of today's youth and encourage them to continue making a positive impact in our communities.
Let us come together to reflect, learn, and honor the legacy of the youth who stood up for a better future.

On 12 June 2026, Etafeni was invited by SASSA to participate in an Outreach Programme. We had the opportunity to set up an Etafeni Information Desk, where we shared information about our services and programmes with community members.
We would like to thank SASSA for the invitation and for creating a platform that allows organisations to connect with and support the community. Together, we continue to make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve.

βš–οΈ JUSTICE AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE βš–οΈ

Today marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for a young woman who was brutally murdered in 2022, and for the family who have endured a long and painful journey seeking accountability.
Since this tragic incident, the family has carried the burden of loss while navigating a lengthy court process.

Etafeni Day Care Centre Trust, together with community members and partners, has stood in solidarity with the family, supporting their call for justice and raising awareness about the devastating impact of Gender-Based Violence.

Today, we acknowledge that the perpetrator has been convicted for this horrific crime. While no court outcome can undo the pain and suffering experienced by the family, this conviction represents an important step toward justice.

We now await the final sentencing, which has been postponed until 10 July 2026.
Etafeni Day Care Centre Trust remains committed to standing with survivors and families affected by violence. We strongly condemn all forms of Gender-Based Violence and any act of violence against women, children, and people of all genders.

As an organisation, we will continue to advocate for safer communities, justice for victims, and accountability for perpetrators. Justice must prevail. Together, we can end Gender-Based Violence.

On 8 June 2026, our Food Security Team collaborated with our ECD children to celebrate World Environment Day. The children took part in a cleaning activity around our ECD area, learning the importance of keeping our environment clean and safe.
It was a wonderful hands-on experience that encouraged teamwork, responsibility, and environmental awareness from an early age.
We are proud of our little ones and our team for making this day meaningful and impactful. 🌍🌱

Child Protection Week at Etafeni

Etafeni proudly commemorated Children Protection Week, hosted by our ECD Centre. The event brought together key community stakeholders who play an important role in protecting and supporting children.

We were honored to welcome representatives from the South African Police Services, firefighters, social workers and our organisation's nurses, who shared valuable information on child safety, health, protection and emergency services.

The children enjoyed engaging activities and had the opportunity to learn about the important work these professionals do in keeping them safe and healthy. We extend our sincere gratitude to all our guests for their time, support and commitment to the well-being of our children.

Together, we can create a safer and brighter future for every child.
