Extinction Rebellion Cape Town - SA Pledge of Rebellion--we demand concrete action on the ecological crisis

Policy is key to the future of our country. We should not be investing in developing an off-shore oil and gas industry - which will lock South Africa into the fossil fuels for decades to come. Take a look at the petition below.

Dear Oceans Not Oil Affiliates and Supporters,
We ask that you to stand with us in a national petition directly appealing to the President and Government of South Africa to take immediate action to phase out fossil fuels and advance a just transition.
This petition is a public call to government leadership—demanding an end to fossil fuel expansion, a halt to offshore oil and gas, and a rapid shift to climate jobs and socially owned renewable energy. We are calling for decisive government action.

158 signatures are still needed! Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation : South Africa Must Act

Climate activists are not alarmist. They publicise the findings of scientists. Thank you Leonie Joubert for your rebuttal of the article by Steven Boykey Sidley in the Daily Maverick.

In his latest column, Steven Boykey Sidley gives a strident take-down of climate activism. But he’s parroting a British libertarian with questionable credentials and a blind spot for evidence.…

Lost Species
By Tayla Paige
I purchased a hotel for the bees & didn’t get
to thank the person I bought it from; that’s the nature
of new-age economic exchange; you pay through a screen & witness
not a soul. I’m trying to invite the neighbours in –
So I wedged the bees’ hotel on my balcony between
a spekboom & a pomegranate tree – perhaps out of a lack
of imagination for how to better help them survive—us survive.
None have settled in, but I don’t blame them for building their graves
far from humans.
Fever trees are a reflection on the black mirror of my phone, & I remember
this internet story of an iPad-kid pinching at the sky, trying to zoom in
on a butterfly flying by. Babies learn the language of touch
screens before the words ‘I miss you’ or ‘come back’. They learn the names
of brands before the names of plants.
What matters will not always exist. We allow ourselves to forget
when our lives are exported to the cloud; all that happens, our memories,
all that we lose. There, the Dodo, the Western Black Rhino, the Bramble Cay,
the Baiji, the Splendid Poison Frog, the Smooth Handfish, the Spix’s Macaw.
All caring animals, an endangered species—all of us hoping to land.
Only a fraction of life lasts
forever in pixels. You need eyes made out
of suns to see the rest.
