The decision to postpone the wind-down by one month is positive news for Newcastle and its surrounding areas. Additionally, reports indicate that the government has provided a R1 billion bailout package and is currently discussing a broader rescue plan. We remain hopeful that all parties involved will develop a viable and sustainable model for the steel industry.

However, as long as the 30% rebate on scrap remains in place, there is a significant risk that this situation could arise again in the future. A long-term solution is essential to ensure stability.

If successfully implemented, this model could serve as a blueprint for other industries in South Africa. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in the economy, contributing approximately 34% to the country’s GDP and employing around 60% of the workforce. Strengthening support structures across industries could drive sustainable economic growth and job creation.
