TEAM SUGAR SOUTH AFRICA YOUTH (TSSAY) STATEMENT FOLLOWING MARCH TO THE
NEWCASTLE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY AGAINST NEPOTISM

16 September 2024 Monday

The Team Sugar South Africa Youth (TSSAY) through its National Youth constellation led by TSSAY Chairperson Cde Ngcebo Makhobe and Secretary Cde Nozipho Zikalala marched to the offices of the Newcastle Local Municipality to sharply raise the matter of nepotism and youth unemployment. The march came after a scandal, which broke after a leaked voice note that expounded and exposed the mechanisms of nepotism used by the IFP on municipal employments. TSSAY notes, with concern the arrogance of the incumbent leaders of the Newcastle local municipality by ignoring the
youth demonstration that which intended to raise young people’s concerns regarding unemployment and nepotism. TSSAY it’s adamant that it will continue to agitate and picket until the relevant offices are able to listen to youth concerns and demands.

TSSAY would like to express it sincerest gratitude to the Newcastle residents, Mkhonto Wesizwe
Youth League and all other Youth formations who formed part of the march against municipal
nepotism. A culture of nepotism and intimidation has ascended in this Municipality, where the
incumbent and its management are alleged of unethical behaviours every day. We call upon COGTA to probe attentively to this matter and other corrupt activities. It amounts to nepotism and
corruption to become involved in the recruitment process of people whom you feel favourable, in
the circumstance where you do not make full disclosure. The incumbent has lost credibility and
should be held accountable or resign otherwise people of Newcastle would rally themselves and
eject them from the offices.

However, with the uppermost fervent TSSAY also appreciate the unbiased forthcoming response
and coverage shown by the media organizations. We deeply value and cherish generosity of the LIT
Radio, 1KZN News and Newcastle Advertiser. The positive exposure you gave our march on the
local news segment provided the Newcastle community with a vivid picture and understanding of all the shenanigans that are happening in our Local Municipality. Newcastle community and youth
formations commended professionalism with which your news team handled the interviews and
final studio presentation. Some of the issues that confront our people, are often got to be confused
by some of the political rhetoric but your explanations was great help to clarify to the public.
