NNPL Facilitators had the privilege of presenting at the Department of Education CSTL Workshop for Life Orientation educators at Newcastle-Inn Hotel.

The session focused on supporting the mental health, dignity, inclusion, and educational rights of LGBTIQA+ learners within schools. Educators actively engaged in discussions around bullying, learner protection, psychosocial support, and inclusive school environments.

We appreciate the positive participation from all educators and remain committed to promoting safe and supportive spaces for every learner.

Freedom Day is often spoken about as a moment in history, a victory over oppression, a reminder of how far South Africa has come. But for many LGBTQ+ people, freedom is still something we are fighting to fully experience, not just something we celebrate.

Freedom means more than the right to vote. It means the right to exist without fear. It means being able to walk in your community without being targeted, to access healthcare without discrimination, to be recognised in your identity, and to love without violence or shame.

For the LGBTQ+ community, Freedom Day is both celebration and confrontation. We celebrate the Constitution that promises dignity, equality, and human rights for all. But we also confront the reality that many q***r people still face exclusion, hate crimes, family rejection, and silence.

True freedom is not selective. It cannot exist for some and not for others.

As we mark this day, we are reminded that the struggle did not end in 1994, it evolved. And we carry it forward, demanding a South Africa where LGBTQ+ lives are protected, valued, and free in every sense.

Our pride is resistance. Our voices are power. Our freedom is non-negotiable.
