IN LOVING MEMORY OF SASHA MNDEBELE 🕊️✨

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Newcastle Prideful Legends mourns the passing of Sasha Mndebele.

Sasha was a loving, vibrant and well-known member of our rainbow community. Their presence carried a warmth and energy that was difficult to miss, and their spirit touched many people around them.

Sasha was not only a friend and supporter of Newcastle Prideful Legends, but someone who believed in the work we do and continuously showed their support for the organisation and the broader LGBTQIA+ community. Their contribution, presence and willingness to stand alongside us will forever remain part of our story.

Today, we remember Sasha for the joy they brought, the love they shared, the lives they touched and the colour they added to our community.

A rainbow light has gone out among us, but the colours Sasha brought into our lives will remain.

To Sasha's family, loved ones, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing them, Newcastle Prideful Legends extends our deepest and most heartfelt condolences during this painful time.

May you find strength in the memories, comfort in one another, and peace in knowing that Sasha's life mattered and their presence will not be forgotten.

This week’s Community Spotlighting takes us to Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal 🇿🇦🏳️‍🌈

Meet Jabulisile Mdlalose, Director of Newcastle Prideful Legends (NNPL), a community-based LGBTQIA+ organisation working to advance understanding, acceptance and equality through advocacy, education and community engagement.

For years, Jabulisile worked to bring LGBTQIA+ sensitisation into spaces where these conversations were needed. Limited resources made that work difficult, and many doors remained closed.

With support from Safe Place International, one of those doors finally opened.

After years of unsuccessful attempts, NNPL was given the opportunity to present its LGBTQIA+ sensitisation work to the Department of Education in Newcastle’s Amajuba District. The presentation led to a request from the Department for more presentations of their work.

This is what supporting community-led change can look like: helping local leaders strengthen the work they are already doing and reach spaces where their voices can create meaningful change.

Jabulisile’s vision is a future where LGBTQIA+ people can live with dignity, safety, freedom and equal opportunity. 🌍❤️

Day 2 | Amajuba District Department of Education LSA Workshop

Newcastle Prideful Legends had the privilege of facilitating a SOGIESC session for Learner Support Agents (LSAs) from various schools across the Amajuba District during the Department of Education workshop.

Learner Support Agents play a critical role in supporting the wellbeing, safety and development of learners. Our session focused on deepening the understanding of S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and S*x Characteristics (SOGIESC) as an essential component of Comprehensive S*xuality Education (CSE) and inclusive learner support.

We explored the realities faced by gender-diverse and LGBTQIA+ learners in schools, the importance of using respectful and affirming language, recognising the unique needs of every learner, and creating school environments where dignity, safety and belonging are protected for all.

Inclusive education is not about treating everyone the same, it is about understanding the diverse experiences of learners and ensuring that every child has equitable access to support, respect and opportunities to succeed.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Amajuba District Department of Education for investing in the capacity of Learner Support Agents and for recognising that inclusive, informed and compassionate support is fundamental to learner wellbeing.

Together, we continue building schools where every learner is valued, every identity is respected, and every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Day 1 | Amajuba District Department of Education Teachers' Workshop

Today, Newcastle Prideful Legends had the honour of facilitating the Day 1 SOGIESC session at the Amajuba District Department of Education Teachers' Workshop.

As part of strengthening Comprehensive S*xuality Education (CSE), we engaged educators on the importance of understanding S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and S*x Characteristics (SOGIESC) and how this knowledge contributes to creating safe, inclusive and affirming school environments.

Schools are diverse spaces, and educators are at the forefront of ensuring that every learner experiences dignity, respect and belonging. Integrating SOGIESC into CSE equips teachers to respond to the realities learners face, challenge discrimination and bullying, and promote a culture of inclusion where every child can learn and thrive.

We sincerely thank the Amajuba District Department of Education for prioritising inclusive education and creating space for these meaningful conversations. Together, we are building schools that uphold equality, respect diversity and leave no learner behind.

Newcastle Prideful Legends Participated in Amajuba District Men's Imbizo Promoting Positive Masculinity

Newcastle Prideful Legends (NNPL) joined stakeholders at the Amajuba District Men's Imbizo, convened by the Amajuba District Municipality in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN COGTA), as part of the commemoration of Men's Month.

The Imbizo brought together government, traditional leadership, faith-based organisations, civil society, law enforcement and community members to discuss positive masculinity, responsible fatherhood, mental health, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), substance abuse, crime, and strengthening families.

Speakers emphasised that masculinity should be rooted in responsibility, integrity, respect and accountability, while encouraging men to speak openly about their challenges and contribute towards building safer, healthier communities.

During the engagement, NNPL Deputy Director, Katleho Mahlobo, highlighted the importance of recognising the diversity of men within society and ensuring that conversations on positive masculinity intentionally include and affirm gender-diverse men. He also called on fathers and families to create safe and affirming spaces for their children, including those who are q***r, stressing that love, acceptance and understanding can challenge discrimination and strengthen families.

"We cannot build stronger families or safer communities while excluding those who are different from ourselves. Love has the power to overcome hate, but that begins with accepting the reality that diversity exists within our families, our cultures and our society. When we embrace one another with dignity and respect, we lay the foundation for communities that are united, compassionate and free from discrimination," Mahlobo said."

The discussions reinforced the shared responsibility of families, traditional leaders, faith communities, civil society and government in raising future generations who value respect, equality and non-violence.

NNPL commends the Amajuba District Municipality and KZN COGTA for convening this important platform and remains committed to promoting healthy and inclusive masculinities, strengthening families, advancing social cohesion, and building communities where everyone can live with dignity, equality and safety.
