Even though it is always evolving, the traditional school curriculum frequently falls behind the constantly shifting demands of the job market. The question that educators,...

Learning a core tech skill requires financial commitment.

From getting a recommended Laptop, paying for onsite and online courses, and paying for software, internet, and electricity.

So for those who do not have all the required financial support/capabilities needed to learn a core tech skill and gain proficiency in the long run, I usually recommend learning a short-term or simple digital skill by the side, so that you can make some money to keep soul and body together while investing in the core tech skill learning that has a long-term benefit and pays betters.

Here are some digital skills you can acquire by the side and use to fund your journey to acquiring that core tech skills that have long-term value.

âś…Virtual Assistance
âś…Book Keeping
âś…Social media management
âś…Content writing
âś…Graphic design with Canva
âś…CV template design with Microsoft Word Doc

You can Google for more of these skills and how to earn proficiency in them.

Once you have learned these digital skills, go on freelancing sites like Fiverr, Freelancer dot com, or Upwork, set up an account, and market your skill.

Or better still, utilize your social media platform and talk about your digital skill, you can't tell where your next client might be.

And you can also train others on how to use some of the tools you use and make some money to fund your core digital skills training.

So while waiting to gain proficiency in that core tech skill, don't die of hunger trying to find it, or don’t let insufficient funds stop you from acquiring your long-term goal of becoming a Programmer, Data Analyst, or Scientist.

Research simple digital skills and tools that the market is looking for, learn and gain proficiency in that skill, then learn how to market that skill and launch out to make that money that would drive you to your desired destination which is to become a core techie and becoming a voice in the tech ecosystem.

I hope this piece of information helps someone out there.

As a tech newbie in "Africa", or say Nigeria /South Africa /Ghana etc looking for an internship and entry-level tech jobs, it’s okay to have lofty aspirations, but don't put your whole energy into searching for remote international jobs or jobs in FAANG companies.

Go on Linkedin or Indeed, search for startups around you or in your country, relatively new ones would be advisable, then apply to them.

Why so?

As a newbie, most of the jobs in your portfolio would be from pet projects and it is easy to be accepted by Startups with your pet projects and freelancing jobs that makes up a huge percentage of your present portfolio or Github.

Join a startup where you would be accepted and get to build live products that would get to replace the pet projects in your portfolio and build you a formidable CV and portfolio that might easily get you international remote job or a job with one of the FAANG companies.

Note that I am not saying newbies can't get international remote jobs or Jobs with one of their favorite FAANG companies, what I am saying is that as a Nigerian techie who is a beginner, there are some disadvantages you face because of location, but having an experience with a company that has a product in the market can be a stepping stone to achieving that beautiful dream.

So while you have those lofty dreams and keep pushing towards achieving them, start with what is available and build for the future.
