Axium Education

Axium Education We are an NPO working in the rural Eastern Cape ensuring rural learners leave school with purpose, agency and options.

Our project draws on a number of strategies that offer additional support at critical stages in the education journey, recognising that this is one that begins with early childhood development and continues throughout life. Interventions focus on the school pipeline from early grade foundations to tertiary access, using a combination of direct work with students, on-going support to schools and teachers, and rural-focused research and advocacy.

Meet Vuyelwa, our Learner Wellness Manager
“Your background does not define your future.” For Vuyelwa Somana, this is more than an encouraging message for the learners she works with it is something she believes deeply in.

She joined Axium Education in 2024 as our Learner Wellness Manager, driven by a passion for supporting young people and helping rural communities access the information, guidance and services they need to thrive.

Since joining Axium, her journey has been about more than supporting learner wellness. It has also been a journey of personal and professional growth.

“Working alongside learners, schools and communities has strengthened my confidence, leadership and communication skills, while helping me better understand the importance of cultural awareness and community-centred support.” She adds.

What keeps her at Axium is the opportunity to grow while making a meaningful difference.“I believe every young person has the ability to succeed when given the right support and opportunities.”
Through her work, Vuyelwa sees potential in young people that is often overlooked because of poverty, limited opportunities and the circumstances in which they grow up.

She wants learners to recognise their own potential, build confidence and understand that where they come from does not determine where they can go.

She is not done growing either. Over the next few years, she hopes to take on greater leadership responsibilities at Axium while continuing to strengthen learner wellness and community support.

Her personal ambition is perhaps the best reflection of the kind of impact she hopes to make:

“I want to be known as a leader who serves with integrity, leads with compassion, and makes a meaningful, lasting impact.”

We’re proud to have Vuyelwa as part of the Axium Education team and look forward to seeing the continued impact of her work with learners and communities. 💚

When Batandwa joined Axium Education, he simply needed a job. But the organisation's mission quickly gave that job a deeper purpose.

"I loved Axium's vision of helping rural children grow in literacy and numeracy. Growing up, I saw learners in fee-paying schools getting opportunities like these. Now I get to help bring those same opportunities to children in rural communities."

He started as a Numeracy Facilitator, helping learners build strong number sense and Maths skills. Today, he is a Numeracy Coach, supporting facilitators to deliver the best lessons they can.

"Becoming a coach taught me that growth isn't just about improving yourself. It's about helping other people grow too."
He mentions that, seeing the impact of the programme is what has kept him at Axium.

Currently, he is learning more about Singapore Maths, a visual way of teaching numeracy, and is working towards becoming an even stronger coach and leader. In the future, he hopes to move into a senior leadership role where he can mentor others and continue strengthening the programme.

Having lived in both a rural community and a township, he encourages young people not to let their background limit their dreams.

For Batandwa, the biggest change has been seeing confidence grow, both in himself and in the young people he works with.

"I've become a more confident leader, and I see that same confidence growing in our learners. They're curious, they ask questions, and they believe their dreams are possible."

and how partnerships between government, employers and civil society can help young people transition into sustainable education, employment and livelihood opportunities.

"Partnerships don't fail because people don't care. They fail when purpose, priorities and implementation aren't aligned."

That was one of the strongest reflections to emerge from Day 1 of the 3rd Eastern Cape Education Partnerships Conference as co-hosted by Eastern Cape Department of Education , Nascee, and DGMT.

We heard from Dr Naledi Mbude-Mehana on the priorities of the 7th Administration from the Department of Basic Education South Africa , explored what meaningful collaboration between government and civil society requires, reflected on the realities of multilingual classrooms, and considered how the Eastern Cape Reading Strategy can be strengthened through more deliberate partnership.

Across every conversation, one message became clear: improving learning outcomes is not about asking any one institution to do more. It is about ensuring that schools, government, civil society, funders and communities are working towards the same outcomes, with clarity of purpose and accountability for impact.

The quality of the conversations today reminded us that the willingness to collaborate already exists. Our challenge now is to translate that willingness into better alignment, stronger implementation and measurable improvements for learners.

Day 2 shifts our focus to young people and the role they play in shaping the future of education and employment.

We look forward to continuing the conversation tomorrow.

Opening Address: Foundational Learning - A key priority of the 7th
Administration.

The importance of shifting the whole education ecosystem, officials, partners and
civil society pulling together to deliver equitable education opportunities for all
children, especially in rural underserved areas.

She says, “Language is the foundation of learning. The question is, how can we build more purposeful partnerships, where we don’t compete buy work together to transform Education.”
