Raise Up Foundation Public Statement on the Tragic Loss of Tshiamo and Baleseng Moramaga

The Raise Up Foundation joins the nation in mourning the heartbreaking loss of Tshiamo and Baleseng Moramaga, two young cousins from Mamelodi East whose lives were brutally cut short. Their passing has left a deep wound in our hearts and serves as a painful reminder of the violence that continues to plague our communities.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Moramaga family, whose courage in speaking out amid their grief is a powerful call for justice and societal change. No family should ever have to endure such unimaginable pain.

This tragedy forces us to reflect not just on what happened, but on what could have been prevented. As a society, we can no longer wait until violence escalates to death before we act. Abuse, neglect, and silence create fertile ground for tragedy. Every raised voice, every act of intervention, and every effort to protect a vulnerable person matters.

We call on men, fathers, brothers, and community leaders to take an active stand against all forms of abuse. Protect women and children. Speak out when you see warning signs. Offer support instead of silence. Confront the culture of violence before it claims another innocent life.

Our communities cannot heal through anger alone we must heal through accountability, compassion, and prevention. The safety of women and children is not a women’s issue; it is a human issue that demands collective responsibility.

Raise Up Foundation remains committed to partnering with families, community structures, and legal institutions to advocate for justice, strengthen protection systems, and support survivors of violence.

As Raise Up Foundation Welcomes Signing of Expropriation Bill into Law

Johannesburg, January 23, 2025 - Raise Up Foundation welcomes the signing of the Expropriation Bill into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa today. This is a significant step towards addressing the historical injustices of land ownership in our country.

The Expropriation Bill repeals the pre-democratic Expropriation Act of 1975 and provides a framework for expropriation that aligns with the Constitution. The new law outlines how organs of state may expropriate land in the public interest for various reasons, including promoting inclusivity and access to natural resources.

We applaud President Ramaphosa for taking this bold step towards creating a more just and equal society. This bill has the potential to address the historical injustices of land ownership in our country and promote economic development and social cohesion.

However, we also acknowledge that the implementation of this bill must be carefully managed to prevent unintended consequences, particularly in rural areas. We are concerned that royal families and other powerful interests may attempt to appropriate land from rightful owners for their own private benefits, without consulting with the communities affected.

Furthermore, we emphasize that land and its resources, including minerals, should be for the people and by the people. The exploitation of our natural resources should benefit all South Africans, not just a privileged few. We urge the government to ensure that the provisions of this bill are implemented in a way that prioritizes the needs and interests of local communities.

We urge the government to ensure that the provisions of this bill are implemented in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner. This includes ensuring that rural communities are consulted and involved in decision-making processes around land expropriation, and that their rights are protected.
